The will of William Smith of the County of Rockingham is dated 3 October 1806 and was presented for probate in November 1806.[2] It mentions:

  • wife Diana (co-executrix)
  • enslaved black people Jude, Mill, and Jack
  • children (some under 21), including son Edward (under 21)
  • brother-in-law Edward H. W. Donaghe (co-executor)
  • Daniel Smith, no relationship stated (co-executor)

Witnesses were Ach'd Rutherford, Benja Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Elizabeth Benson, Elizabeth Rogers, H. I. Gamoill, and D. Lofland.

Research Notes

On 14 June 1830, Edward H. Smith, Michael H. Harris and Jane H. his wife, Mary K. Smith, and William J. Smith, being children of William Smith deceased, granted a quietus to the exuectors of William's estate, namely Diana Smith, Daniel Smith, surviving executrix/executor and the representatives of Edward H. McDonough.[3] The deed also mentions that Michael H. Harris and Jane H. and Mary K. Smith had sold to Edward H. Smith their interest in the estate of James Smith deceased.
