Dr. William Smith, the son of William Smith of East Kingston, was born 2 Aug 1737. He married Betsey Batchelder, the daughter of Ebenezer Batchelder and Dorothy Boynton, on 2 Dec 1761. He moved the family to Gilmanton on 15 Oct 1768. He was the first doctor and only doctor of the town for many years, tending to the rich and poor. I think he was a generous man in nature. He was the town clerk and also was active in his church, the first Congregational Chuch. He knew the importance of education and also organized and taught in the schools. In 1778 there were 6 school districts. In religion he was firmly a Calvinist, and believed in the doctrine of grace. He lived to the ripe old age of 93y 6m outliving 2 of his 11 children. #S166

Note: added findagrave death date, as it is engraved on his tombstone, but keeping it marked uncertain, as there is a discrepancy with another source. [1]
