Joseph was born about 1860. He is the son of James Smitley and Rebecca Ditton. By 1880 he was working as a laborer.[1] He married Louisa (Knox) Friend about 1886. By 1900 he had 4 children and was working as a wood chopper, probably for the mines.[2] In 1910 he was farming and working in the lumber trade.[3] He p assed away before 1939.
