Biography

Clarissa was born in 1867 the daughter of John Smitley and Charlotta Lowery. She married Thomas Jose in 1887. She passed away in 1935.

"DUNBAR, March 19 - The Baptist Church was crowded to capacity Sunday afternoon with relatives and friends who had gathered to pay final tribute to the memory of Mrs. Clarissa Jose, who died Thursday. Rev. McCulloch of Belle Vernon and Rev. David E. Minerd of Connellsville officiated. A short service was held at the home, where "Abide With Me" was sung. At the full service at the church members of the choir sang "It Is Well With My Soul", "Going Down the Valley" and "God Will Take Care of You". Burial was in Mount Auburn Cemetery, with John Smitley, Ben Smitley, Louis Smitley, Adam Smitley, Peter Smitley and Lincoln Smitley acting as pallbearers. Mrs. Jose was the wife of Thomas Jose. She was born on March 1, 1867. Mr. and Mrs. Jose were married 48 years. She was the last charter member of the Baptist Church. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters. In addition to her husband, four brothers, Jacob, George, Reuben and Lincoln Smitley survive."[1]

"MRS. THOMAS JOSE DIES AT DUNBAR; FUNERAL SUNDAY

Mrs. Clarissa Jose, 86 years old, a lifelong resident of Dunbar, wife of Thomas Jose, died at 10:50 o'clock Thursday morning at her home of complications.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by these brothers: Jacob Smitley, George Smitley and A. L. Smitley, all of Dunbar, and Reuben Smitley of Wyoming.

She was one of the oldest members of the Dunbar Baptist Church.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late home following by a full service at the Dunbar Baptist Church at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. H. D. Perrier, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in Mount Auburn Cemetery."[2]
