Birth
Anna was born about 1887 in Wisconsin.
Name
Her Hocąk name was NaGeeJayWinKah (1912 census) , which is for Ną́jijewįga, "She Who Alights on a Tree", which is from ną, "wood, tree"; jije, "to stand, to be standing, to come"; -wį, a feminine gender infix; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. "She Who Alights on a Tree" is a well attested Thunderbird Clan name.
Lineage
In the 1905 Wisconsin census and the 1910 Federal census, she is living with Charles E. Smoke and is identified as his niece. Since they have the same surname, she is the daughter of an unknown brother of Charles’. In the 1905 Indian census, she is living with an elderly Charles Smoke and his wife Jane as their granddaughter.
