Jan Arnošt Smoler (german: Johann Ernst Schmaler) was born on 3 March 1816 in Merzdorf / sorb. Lućo[1] near Uhyst, Boxberg, Saxony to Johann Karl Schmaler / Smoler (1791-1848) & Maria Miesner (1796-1856). He passed away on 13 June 1884 in Bautzen / sorb. Budyšin, Saxony.
In 1851 he married first Amalia Christa Deutscher (1832-1868) - daughter of Michael Deutscher - in Bautzen. Together they had 5 sons and 2 daughters.
He remarried 1870 Ernestine Heinzelmann (1830-1903) - daughter of Friedrich Ferdinand Heinzelmann - in Bautzen.
He was a Sorbian philologist, Slavist, linguist, ethnologist, writer and publisher & publicist from the Upper Lausitz / Oberlausitz and played a vital role in revitalizing the Sorbian languages in the 19th century. He also supported a form of Pan-Slavism.
