He was son of William Smyth of Dundrum, Co. Down (whose father William had come over to Ireland from Rossdale Abbey, Yorkshire) and Mary Dowdall, daughter of Thomas Dowdall, of Glaspistol, Co. Louth.

He had succeeded his father-in-law as Dean of Emly and Prebendary Fennor 1693-5. He was Vicar Grean (Cashel) 1692-5.
Thomas Smyth became Bishop of Limerick and was consecrated in Trinity College Dublin Chapel Dec. 8, 1695 by the Archbishop. of Cashel, assisted by the Bishops of Clogher, Killala, Dromore and Cloyne.
He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Trinity College Dublin in 1714.
He married Dorothea Burgh, daughter of Ulysses Burgh, D.D., Bishop of Ardagh. [1]
