Biography

A marriage settlement was made on 1 June 1526, between William Massy of Denfield, gent, and Thomas Smythe of the Hough esq, upon the marriage of Hugh son of William and Jane daughter of Thomas.[1]

"Founder of a family which flourished in great repute at Hatherton and the Hough, two ancient lordships in the neighborhood of Nantwich, in Cheshire."

"Captain John Smyth, born in the county of Chester, and descended from the Smyths of Cuerdley, but whether through the family of Oldhough, or of Hatherton, is not known, was distinguished by his achievements in America and in Europe." This is Captain John Smith of Pocahantas fame.

"The Smyths likewise of Staffordshire, of Lincolnshire, and of Yorkshire, all respectively claimed connection with the parent flock of Cuerdley."

Visitations 1613 names him Smith, of Hough in Wybunbury and Sir Thomas Smithe of Chester.

Omerod says he died about the year 1579.

History of Cheshire says, "Thomas Smith, . . . is one of the very few instances which Cheshire affords of a person raised by trade seating himself in manerial property, and instantly forming connections with the leading families ofthecounty. He (or his son of the same name) was subsequently knighted, and was several times mayor of Chester."
