Biography

He is thought to be John Smyth of Aylburton, near Lidney, in Gloucestershire. His family had lived in Aylburton for several generations. A John Smyth was living there at the beginning of the reign of Henry VI and he is possibly the person recorded as transferring the ownership of his lands in the hundred of Blyddelowe and manor of Ayleborton in 1436 (14 Henry VI).[1]

His sons were successful merchants in Bristol
