Biography

Note that the different counties mentioned in this profile are not close to each other.

The father is a real person from Cheshire, which is yet another place. His connection to this profile is very doubtful. See the father's profile for more explanation.

Note of caution

This profile is currently connected to what the great genealogist J H Round called the "The Carington Imposture", a famous fraudulent pedigree. See his Peerage and Pedigrees Vol. II, starting at page 134. At least some of the people in that pedigree never existed and others are represented inaccurately.

Robert's position in that false pedigree is remarkable. See Round (p.199, p.200).

It is a singular; fact, and one which, I believe, was first brought to light by Dr. Copinger's book, that the perpetrators of this huge imposture had two strings to their bow: it is alleged that on two separate occasions Caringtons from Cheshire settled in Essex, and assumed, for different reasons, the same name of Smith! It is strange enough that even one should have done so; but that two did it implies surely that the pedigree;-maker; had two starters, and was not sure with which he should "declare to win."

My own explanation of this pedigree is that it represents two different attempts to derive the Smiths of Rivenhall; and Cressing, at the period when they first emerge, from the Cheshire house of Carington.
