Biography

Alice Smythe was a daughter of Henry Smythe Esq., of Corsham, Wiltshire, and Elizabeth Owen, daughter of Thomas Owen of London, Serjeant at Law.

She was baptised Alice Smyth on 04 Sep 1597 at Corsham, Wiltshire, daughter of Henry Smyth Esq., and Elizabeth.[1]

She was made a bequest of £20 in the will of her aunt Mary (Smythe) Davy, the will made on 16 Oct 1620 and proved on 02 Jul 1624.[2] The bequest was to be paid within three months of Alice's marriage.

Alice (noted as Alice Mountjoy daughter of the Testator's brother Henry Smith) was a beneficiary of the will of her uncle Sir Richard Smythe of Leeds Castle, Kent, the will made in 1627 and proved in 1628.[3]

Marriage

Alice Smith, daughter of Henry Smith Esq and Elizabeth, married William 'Montioy' gent., on 01 Apr 1624 at Corsham, Wiltshire.[1]

"Gulielmus Montioy gen et Alicia Smith filia Henrici Smith arm et Elizabethe uxoris .. "

Later Life

Alice was a beneficiary and co-Executor of the will of her husband William Mountjoy of Biddestone St Peter, Wiltshire, the will made on 31 July 1654 and proved on 16 Apr 1656.[5]

She was noted at the marriage of her daughter, Mary, in 1657:[6]

“John Skrine, son and heir of Henry Skrine and Edith his wife., was married in June 1657 to Mary, only daughter of William Mountjoy, Esqr., deceased, late Lord of the Manor of Biddeston St Peter, near Corsham, co. Wilts., and Alice, his widow, their banns having been published in the Market Place, at Bath on 20th and 27th May, and 3rd June preceding.”

Death and Burial

Alice Mountjoy, wife of William, gentleman, was buried on 26 Aug 1668 at Chippenham St Andrew, Wiltshire.[4]
