Jack was born in Alabama in 1909 to Robert Smythe and Addie Bell Freeman. In 1910, the family was living in Grassy Point, Washington County, Florida. His maternal aunt, Lucy Freeman Moore,
was living with them.[1]
In 1913, his father committed suicide after fatally shooting his aunt who rebuffed Robert's advances. Jack was four years old at the time.[2][3]
His mother Addie married seven more times after his father's death. By 1920, she had married Comer Jolly. They were living in Waycross, Ware County, Georgia.[4] Jack was listed as Jack Jolley on the census. By 1935, Addie and Jack were living in Duval County, Florida. Jack was listed as Jack Smith.[5]
Jack married Annie Kathleen Payne on 10 Mar 1939 in Baker County, Florida.
He stated he had been married and divorced before in the marriage record.[6] In 1945, they were living in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, in the household of his mother-in-law, Jessie Payne. They had an infant son, John Walter Smyth. John was stated to be in the Army.[7]
However, according to enlistment records, Jack enlisted in the US Army on 14 Jun 1946. He was in the Army Corps of Engineers serving as a Private First Class in the Hawaiian department.[8]
John and Annie divorced in 1947 in Duval County, Florida.[9]
Jack passed away in 1968 in Orange County, Florida.[10] He is buried in the New Smyrna Cemetery in Edgewater, Volusia County, Florida, next to his mother, Addie Bell Freeman Hawley. They share a grave marker.[11][12]
John was in an obituary on 8 February 1968 in Orlando, Florida, United States. He died (age 59) in about 1968. His obituary stated he was born in Bay Minette, Ala.[13]
