Biography

John was born 25 JUN 1882 in Antelope County, Nebraska, USA. He can be found in the Nebraska State Census, 1885, when he is only 3 years old.[4] His father, John Bowls Snead is age 53 and his wife, Mary J Snead is age 33. John Snead also has a new baby brother and sister listed because their ages are listed as zero. Presumably these are twins, Nellie and Delbert Snead.

John Snead marries at age 29 in Clearwater, Antelope, Nebraska, United States to Blanche A Harbaugh, age 28 on 19 Jun 1912. [5]

In the 1900 US Census, John P Snead, Sr. is a 16 year old son of John Bowls Snead. His father's state of birth is listed as Tennessee. But I do not think the mother, Mary J Snead, that is listed is John P Snead's mother. That is because the mother's birthplace is listed as Scotland. Mary J Snead is born in Ohio, clearly not Scotland.

This 1900 US Census, J B and Mary J Snead, indicate that they have been married for 22 years. Since John P Snead is 16 perhaps he is by another mother indicating that Mary may not have felt that they were ever going to have children since after 5 years they had none. Mary indicated on the census that she had born 8 children but only 6 were living. This would indicate that John P was one of her own children. But the question still remains about the different birth state of the mother being Scotland.

Mary and John Bowls Snead have these children according to the 1900 US Census. John S Snead, Son, M 17 Nebraska, Listed a farm laborer but went to school 8 months of the year.

Nellie Snead Daughter F 15 Nebraska, was in school 9 months

Bell Snead Daughter F 13 Nebraska, was in school 9 months

Jessie Snead Daughter F 9 Nebraska, was in school 9 months

Ruth Jane Snead Daughter F 5 Nebraska

Josie Snead Daughter F 4 Nebraska

His father, John Bowls Snead, was a farmer who owned the land but it was mortgaged. Sometime between the 1900 census and the 1910 census. J. B. Snead, his father, dies and leaves Mary a widow. No headstone can currently be found. More than likely the farm was lost to the bank shortly after he died. [6]

By the time of the May 1910 US. Census, the family has pulled up roots and moved to Hazelwood, Webster, Missouri, United States. Mary, age 57, is listed as a widow. John P Snead, age 27, occupation is a rural school teacher. His sister Jessie, age 19, is also listed as a rural School teacher too. The other two sisters, Ruth Jane (age 16) and Josephine (age 14) must be at home because no occupation is listed for them. Bell Snead (age 23) is not listed; perhaps she married. The family is still listed as owning a farm that is mortgaged with the bank. Mary J Snead is listed as an Employer. So they must have hired hands to run the farm or since schools are out for planting and harvest, John P Snead, probably does a lot of the farm work in the off season of teaching. On this census, John P Snead mother's state of birth is listed as Ohio, the same as Mary J Snead.
