John was born about 1754. He was the son of John Snead and Jane Winn. He passed away in 1819.

• Be it known that on this the 29th day of March 1847 personally appeared before me John S Pleasants a Justice of the peace in and for Halifax County Virginia Rebecca Sneed aged Eighty five years who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of Congress passed on the 7th July 1838 granting half pay and pensions to certain widows That she is the widow of John Sneed who enlisted as a private soldier in the fall of the year 1775 in the Continental army that her deceased husband resided in the County of Hanover and state of Virginia when he enlisted and that he was attached she thinks to one of the first Regiments raised in Virginia called Virginia Continental Regiments and that he continued in the service until the latter part of the year 1778 She further states that her deceased husband was in a good many Battles during the time he was in the Army one of the first she thinks was the Battle at the Great Bridge [9 Dec 1775] and the Battle at Gwynns Island [sic: Gwynn Island, 8 - 10 Jul 1776] was another Battle that he was engaged in. she has frequently heard her deceased husband speak of other engagements as well as the movement of the Army during the time he was in the service but she is unable to recollect the particular movements of the Army or other engagements than those specified as she was not married to him before he quit the service. she feels satisfied however that the records of the first Regiment raised in Virginia on Continental establishment will furnish ample proof of the Services of her deceased husband to which she refers the Honorable Department. She further states that she was married to the said John Sneed in the County of Henrico Virginia on the 5th day of April 1779 that she was not married to him previous to his leaving the service but the marriage took place prior to the 1st January 1794 to wit on the day above stated and that her husband died on the 18th day of September 1819 and that she has not intermarried since the death of her husband the said John Sneed Witness my hand and seal this the 29th day of March 1847 Rebecca HerXmark Sneed

• State of Virginia, Halifax County Be it known that on this the 18th day of October 1847 personally appeared before me John S Pleasants a Justice of the peace for said County Rebeca Snead, widow of John Snead deceased and being first sworn according to law doth upon her oath make the following declaration in addition to what she has before stated. she states as well as she know recollects Col Patrick Henry commanded the Regiment [appointed 6 Aug 1775] to which her husband was first attached when he entered the service in 1775. he was a Private in the 1st Virginia regiment, which was afterwards known as the 1st continenatal regiment – and was commanded by Col Isaac Read [VAS4183] from old age and loss memory she is unable to recollect the names of the various company officers under whom her husband served during thelong time he was in the service Rebeca herXmark Snead

• Rebecca Snead’s application was supported by a deposition by John Snead, son of Robert Snead (R9891) and nephew of her late husband, stating that his father and uncle had served together.
• In the file are two lists of names and dates of birth, transcribed below. The first is apparently an original, and the second is a certified copy. First list: Dabney Sneed was born august the 3d 1780[?], Betsy Sneed was born September the 4th 1785, John Sneed was born June the 3rd 1788, Jincy Sneed was born march the 17th 1792 Polly Sneed was born april the 17 1794 wiliam Sneed was born November the 26 1796 H P Sneed was born June the 26 1800[?]. Second list - connection unknown: Cate was born Nov the 10th 1793, Sal was born Feb the 2nd 1797, Edmond was born July the 11th 1799, Hamton was born Dec 12th 1803, Mary was born April 8th 1802, Charlotte was born January 23rd 1807, Rody was born the 10th Feb’y 1811, Anderson was born May 13th 1814, and Elisha was born November 20th 1817.

A notice published in the Virginia Argus, Richmond Virginia, on 31 Aug 1812. Publication required because Billey Snead and Patrick Snead had not appeared in court and were found not to be inhabitants of Hanover County, VA. John was a plaintiff in the case.
