Biography

Jacob Snell was born circa 1778, a son of Peter Jost Snell and Susannah (Kilts) Snell. Jacob married Mary Caroline Helwig, born 1782. Jacob's middle initial varies from resource to resource. His name is transcribed as Jacob T. Snell on the United States Census of 1850, where he and his wife are living in Manheim, Herkimer county, New York, with his wife and their son, Jacob J. Snell and Jacob's wife, Ann/Amy and two grand- children. [1] His name is transcribed as Jacob E. Snell on the christening records for his daughter, Mary Ann Snell, born May 7, 1816, and christened in June, 1816, at the Saint Johns Dutch Reformed church of Saint Johnsville, Montgomery county, New York. Researcher's Notes

Jacob's Find A Grave memorial gives his name as Jacob P. Snell, [3] which seems logical, since most of his siblings have Peter in their name, in honor of their father. Children of German descent are often given a Vorname or first name and a Rostnam, the "given name" by which they will be called by the family. Probably the baptismal name is actually Peter Jacob, but since he is "called" by the name Jacob, the P is used as a middle initial. The year of birth given on Find A Grave is too early, when compared to the census records.
