Biography

Between 1755 and 1758, Jeremiah Snyder was born in Dutchess County, New York.

Jacob Snyder (1740-1821) settled in Lancaster Twp. [1] Jacob had a son named Jacob as well. There are a number of Jacob Snyders in this history and it appears that they have sometimes been confused with each other. Patrick McNiff’s Map of Lake Twp. recorded Jacob Sr. on Lots 22 and 23, Con. 2. He later acquired other land. LL recorded that Jacob Sr. had at least 8 children in 1783.

In 1777, Jeremiah served in Lt. Col. Francis Van Pfister’s Loyal Volunteers.

On Apr. 4, 1780, Jeremiah enlisted as a private in the King’s Royal Regiment of New York. He served in Capt. Munro’s Company from 1780 to 1782 and became a grenadier in 1783. He was recorded as born in 1758 in Dutchess Co., New York and was a farmer.

In 1784, Jeremiah settled on part Lot 24, Con. 2 and Lot. 24, Con. 3, Lake Twp. by his father-in-law. Lake Township later became Lancaster Township.

On May 25, 1784, Jeremiah married Catharine Snyder in Three Rivers, Quebec. Catherine was baptized on July 3, 1765 in Pine Plains, Dutchess County. She was the daughter of Jacob Snyder UE and Susannah Meyer of Lancaster Twp. Jacob lived about 5 miles north of Johann Jost Snyder and Magdalena Flagler. Jacob was the grandson of John Wilhelm Schneider and Anna Gertraud Betzer, Palatines from Hachenburg, Germany. No family relationship has been found between Jeremiah and his wife. Two of Jacob’s children, Jacob and Susanna, were connected to the Young family.

In 1785, a Jeremiah settled in Osnabruk Twp., Stormont Co. but it was probably not the son of Simon Snyder.

On Apr. 7, 1786, Mary Snyder was born in Sorel, Quebec or Williamstown.

The 1786 Provision List for the Old Eastern District (including Lake Twp.) recorded Jeremiah with his wife and one child.

From 1786 to 1787, Jeremiah was one of the “most turbulent” objectors to the election of Capt. John Macdonell (Abercalder) as Head of Lake Twp. in a meeting in Lancaster.

On January 1, 1787, Catharine Snyder was born in Williamstown (Anderson). On Feb. 11, 1807, Catharine Snyder married David Amey in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian in Williamstown, Ontario. [2]

About of before 1789, John was born. On Oct. 8, 1810, John Snider made a land petition for 200 acres as a yeoman of Lancaster Township. He was the son of Jeremiah Snider, a Loyalist of the same township. David Amey J.P. and John Booth J.P. certified the petition. John delivered the petition in person in the Town of York. On Oct. 12, 1810, the petition was approved. [3]

About or before 1789, Elizabeth was born. On Sept. 11, 1810, Elizabeth Williams of Lancaster Township made a land petition for 200 acres. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Snider, a Loyalist of the same township, and the wife of James Williams. She wished to locate on Lot 4, Con. 2, Lancaster Township. On Aug. 7, 1811, the petition was recommended. [4]

On January 5, 1794, David Snyder was born in Williamstown. On Oct. 13, 1818, David Snider, a yeoman of Lancaster Township, made a land petition for 200 acres. He was the son of Jeremiah Snyder, a Loyalist of the same township. John Cameron of Charlottenburg was to be his agent. It was certified that David did his duty during the late war. On June 30, 1819, an order was issued. [5]

In 1796, Simon was born. On Oct. 14, 1828, Simon Snider, a yeoman of Lancaster Township, made a land petition for 200 acres. He was the son of the late Jeremiah Snider, a Loyalist of the same township. James Pringle certified that Jeremiah Snider had retained his loyalty during the late war and that Simon Snider had done his duty in the defense of the province. On Dec. 3, 1828, the petition was recommended. On the cover, Simon was recorded as a Loyalist, but he had not claimed that in his petition. As Simon was over 21 years old he had to have been born before or about 1807. [6]

On Sept. 1, 1797, Jeremiah Snider received a grant of on the 200 acres of Lot 24, Con. 3, Lancaster Township (no source). The land records did not show him having title until 1828.

About 1798, Eleanor/Helena “Leney” Snyder was born in Williamstown. On May 9, 1816, she married Jonas Snyder who was her first cousin. He was the son of Abraham Snyder and Rachel Emigh/Amey. On Apr. 3, 1834, Eleanor Snider, a spinster of Lancaster Township, made a land petition. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Snider, a Loyalist of the same township. On Oct. 2, 1834, the petition was recommended. [7]

About 1798, Israel was born. On Oct. 12, 1824, Israel Snider of Lancaster Township made a land petition for 200 acres. He was the son of Jeremiah Snider, a Loyalist of the same township. On Dec. 4, 1824, an order was issued. [8] The 1852 Census, Lancaster Township, page 67, recorded Israel Snider, aged 54 (born about 1798), born in Upper Canada, a farmer, religion PKS, Mary, 40, born in Ireland, Roman Catholic, Donald, 22, a labourer, Jeremiah, 20, Alexander James, 18, Mary Ann, 12, Israel, 10, William, 6, and Robert Nicholas, 3, the children all born in Upper Canada.

On July 25, 1800, Susannah Snyder was born in Williamstown and was baptized on August 31, 1800, in Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Williamstown, Glengarry, Ontario.

About 1803, Jeremiah was born. On Oct. 12, 1824, Jeremiah Snider Jr. of Lancaster Township made a land petition for 200 acres. He was the son of Jeremiah Snider Sr., a Loyalist of the same township. On Dec. 2, 1824, the petition was recommended. [9] The 1852 Census, Lancaster Township, page 15-17, recorded Jeremiah Snider, 49, a farmer, Jane, 36, William Alexander, 15, Susannah, 13, Flora, 10, Mary, 8, Catharine, 4, Jeremiah, 2, Elizabeth, and Nancy, all born in Upper Canada and Presbyterian.

On May 19, 1805 Jacob Snyder was born Lancaster Township. On June 23, 1805, he was baptized in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Williamstown, Charlottenburg, Glengarry County (Bapt. Reg.). [10]

About 1808, Maria Snyder (1.2.3.2.11) was born in Williamstown.

In 1809, a Jeremiah Snyder was commissioned as an Ensign in the 1st Regiment of Glengarry Militia in 1809.

Before 1809, Catharine died.

It has been incorrectly recorded that Jeremiah married Elizabeth Young. However, Elizabeth Young, Janet (Young) Blair’s sister, did have an affair with Jeremiah in 1809 after Catharine had died. A daughter named Elizabeth resulted in 1809 and was recorded as illegitimate by the Rev. John Bethune. She was baptized Elizabeth Young, daughter of Jeremiah Snyder and Elizabeth Young. She was raised by her mother’s brother, John Young. In 1832, she married William McKee. Her mother went on to marry Henry Runions.

In 1810, Jeremiah married Mary McIntosh in Cornwall.

In 1812 and 1813, a Jeremiah served in the 1st Glengarry Militia. His children’s land grant petitions indicated that Jeremiah was a Loyalist but did not record that he had served in the War of 1812.

On June 6, 1825, Jeremiah Snider sold the west half of Lot 24, Con. 3, Lancaster Twp. to John McIntosh.

On December 27, 1827, Jeremiah made a will (Anderson).

In 1828, Jeremiah Sr. held title to the west 150 acres of Lot 22, Con. 4, Lancaster Township. On January 1, 1828, his will was registered in the Land Book Abstract. He willed land to Jacob and Jeremiah Jr. The early land transfers are online at [11]

Before 1829, Jeremiah died, according to Simon’s land petition in that year. [12]

Jeremiah's widow would also have held title to his land. On November 2, 1830, the west 150 acres of Lot 22, Con. 4, Lancaster Township were granted to Catharine Graham. Jeremiah's first wife was Catharine but she was reported to have died in around 1809. It was reported that Jeremiah had a second wife named Mary. There were no sources for Catharine's death or the marriage to Mary. Possibly Catharine Graham was his first wife and still living. After Jeremiah's death, Catharine may have married Mr. Graham. Otherwise, who was Catharine Graham? Catharine later gives land to Jacob and Jeremiah Jr. as Jeremiah Sr. requested in his 1828 will. [13]

Snyder-7730 and Snider-656 appear to represent the same person because: These two men have the same wife, Catharine, and daughter, Mary, who married John See. I need to merge these two profiles before updating John and Mary See's profiles with sources.
