Biography

See notes under her husband.

Jan was from Lagedijk, part of Wervershoof. Dieuwer was a widow when they married, and was from Wervershoof then. So Jan probably married an older woman. But there’s no earlier Wervershoof marriage listed for her, nor any earlier children. .[1]

Dieuwer Cornelis was sought in the following towns: Wervershoof, Andijk, Lutjebroek, Bovenkarspel, Hauwert, Midwoud, Westwoud, Oostwoud, Grootebroek, Hem, Hoogkarspel, Blokker, Sijbekarspel, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Hoorn, Opperdoes, Schellingkhout, Twisk, Winkel, Spanbroek.

Dieuw's mother's and a grandmother's name were almost certainly Dieuw and Pietertje, so those are the names we are looking for. Teet (Jan's mother) and Trijn (Jan's grandmother) are less likely but also possible.

It's possible the last name Snijder comes from Dieuwer's side of the family. These Snijders might have been relatives.

  • There was a Dirck Cornelis Snijder and Geert Pieters who had a Cornelis in Lutjebroek on March 17 1669. His name suggests this Dirck may have been the ancestor of many of the Snijders in West-Friesland.
  • There was a Cornelis Dirksz Snijder and Anna Klaas had several children in Grootebroek in the 1720's. There are no Snijders listed in Grootebroek before this. He might have come from Hoogkarspel, where a Dirk Snijder seems to have lived a generation before.
  • There was also a Klaas Pietersz Snijder & Lijsbeth Jacobs in Wijdenes in 1703 and in 1705 in Zwaag. No further records tell us anything more of them.
  • There was a Cornelis Jacobsz Snijder & Trijn Jans from Twisk who baptized : Cornelis (1700). No other children are mentioned between them. However, Cornelis married 2 Dieuwer Theunis on February 27 1684. Children: Theunis (1686), Teunis (1687), Teunis (1688), Pieter (1690), all in Twisk. Our Dieuwer would probably have been named for Cornelis’ first wife, probably as the first daughter born to Cornelis and Trijn. That kind of thing happened in some Dutch areas to preserve the first wife’s memory. However, I have found no instances of it in West-Friesland, And why would Dieuwer name one of her own daughters Dieuw?

There were a handful of Dieuwers baptized by a Cornelis in West-Friesland at this time. Names of parents suggest none of these was our Dieuwer. These were all the Dieuwer Cornelises I could find being baptized between 1696 and 1703 and being married between 1718 and 1723:

  • A Dieuwtjen was baptized by Cornelis Hendriksz Harder and Trijntjen Sijmens on Sept 7 1696 in Enkhuizen.
  • A Diewertje was baptized by Cornelis Jansz and Antje Lourens on Nov 30 1696 in Hoorn. She died June 21 1725 in Hoorn.
  • A Diewertje was baptized by Cornelis Reijersz Tasman and Trijntje Teding van Berckhout on Nov 16 1698 in Hoorn (quite possibly a sailor family from Schellingkhout). She would have been the most likely Dieuw Cornelis to marry Dirk Bastiaensz Groot in Schellingkhout on November 8 1722. Both were from Schellingkhout.
  • A Dieuwertjen was baptized by Cornelis Backer and Annetjen Heindricks in Medemblik on May 24 1699. She acted as a baptism witness for her sister Aafjen's children Cornelis & Grietje in Medemblik in 1725 and 1726.
  • A Diewertje was baptized by Cornelis Compostel and Meijnutje Hinlopen on June 10 1700 in Hoorn. She died on April 8 1728 in Hoorn.
  • A Dieuwertje was baptized by Cornelis Dircks Koppe, the burgemeester of Grootebroek, and Sijtje Olbrants on March 28 1702 in Grootebroek. She married Claas Gaas and died in 1754 at which time Claas married again.
  • A Dieuw was baptized by Cornelis Mekkesz and Lijsbet Hercks in Hauwert on Oct 2 1702.
  • A Diewertje was baptized by Cornelis Naamsloot and Judith Pieters on Nov 13 1703 in Hoorn. She died Nov 23 1703.
  • A Dieuwtje was baptized by Cornelis Thomasz and Margaritie Sluijters on Feb 17 1704 in Enkhuizen.
  • A Dieuw was baptized by Cornelis Pietersz Bullooper and Trijn Harckes on Dec 6 1705 in Andijk. She married Cornelis Cornelisz Backer Man (Manjes) on Jan 16 1727 in Andijk.
  • Three Dieuwertje Cornelis' died in Enkhuizen in 1721, 1727 and 1728. No further information about any of them is given.
  • Dieuwer Cornelis married Christiaan Gerritsz on Sept 27 1722 in Hoorn. Both were from Wognum.
  • Dieuwertje Cornelis married Jan Claesz Mans on Feb 24 1726 in Hoorn. Both were from Zwaag. This would have been too late to be our Dieuw.

The most likely scenario is that Dieuwer was born in another town and married someone who either was born or worked in Wervershoof. They would have been married in Dieuwer's town and then settled down in Wervershoof. Their having no children there would suggest that they were only married for a few short years before he died. The best guess would be they were married somewhere between 1720 and 1723, Dieuwer being born between 1696 and 1703. The only nearby town with no baptism or marriage records from these years is Venhuizen. And it turns out Dieuwer Cornelis was a very popular name in this town!

There were 2 Dieuwertje Kornelis' on the Venhuizen membership list of 1707, both by themselves. Neither is likely to be our Dieuwertje this early on. One was listed beside Jan Kornelisz Sluis (thus possibly her brother) and his wife Trijntje Meijnders, living in de Buurt. A third Dieuw Kornelis was listed with her husband Pieter Harckes Admiraal.
