She has had a tedious passage of a hundred and twenty-five days from the Downs, whence she took her departure on the 18th November. On 7th March she encountered a severe gale commencing at from east to east-south-east, and subsiding at east-north-east, from 2 till 4 p.m., it blew with great violence. The passing of another of the early residents of Canterbury is marked by the death, at Christchurch, of Colonel Rochfort Snow, who was for many years engaged in the Customs offices at Lyttelton and in Christchurch, and who was also a prominent volunteersman, serving in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, which, at one time, he connnanded. A BOY PIONEER. COLONEL SNOW'S MEMOIRS. AUCKLAND UNDER ARMS. SCHOOLBOYS IN THE MUSTER. INCIDENTS OF MAORI WARS. The late Colonel Rochfort Snow, who died in Christchurch on March 17, was a boy of nine when he stepped ashore at Auckland from the Lord Burleigh in 1860. It may be that because he was a boy pioneer his memories were particularly interesting. These he has left in memoirs written by his own firm band, and the valuable record is at present in the possession of his brother. Mr. C. D. Snow, of Epsom. . . .
(1940). DEATH OF SIR THOMAS SNOW. Described by “The Times." London, as a keen and capable soldier who entered the service at the time of tile Zulu War, Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas D’Oyly Snow, K.C.B.. K.C.M.G., died in August in England at the age of 82, He served with distinction during the Great War, and it was said of him that his military gifts matured with the changes that gradually transformed the army. In outlook and ideas he was always in advance of his lime. He excelled in practical training of troops and staffs for modern war, and the fighting efficiency of the British Expeditionary Force in 1914 owed much to him. General Snow had several relatives in New Zealand. An uncle, Mr Charles Hastings Snow, retired about 1896 after 30 years’ service in the Government Audit Department. Two sons. Mr C. D’Oyly Snow and Mr E. H. Snow, live in Auckland. A cousin, the late Colonel Rochfort Snow, was well known in Christchurch. Another [second] cousin is Mrs A T. C. Sellars, of Christchurch.
