Biography

Charles D. Snow was born between July, 1838 and June,1839 in New York state, USA.[1] Charles' Find A Grave Memorial states he that was born in 1836 from tombstone; Census reports say 1839.[2] It includes a photo of his 1891 obituary, stating he died in St. Ignace (Mackinaw Co.), Michigan and that his body was shipped to his grave-site in Chelsea (Washtenaw Co.), Michigan. He was 53 years old when he died. He left a wife and two daughters "to mourn his loss".
Although the 1840 US Census did not list children or wives by name but, given the data from subsequent census reports, it is clear that this Snow family began their 19th Century Odyssey on "the sidewalks of New York," to paraphrase a song. Between 1840 and 10 Sept., 1850 Charles moved with family to Sylvan Twp., Washtenaw Cty., MI. Others of his family immigrated from England, joining him there. In 1850 next farm listed was Thomas snow's parents (Charles's grandparents) and Thomas's younger brothers, James and John Snow. Thomas Snow's farm was valued at $2,000 in 1850, making him one of the wealthier landowners in the township.
By 11 July, 1860 Charles was a teacher in Chelsea school and was still single and living with his parents on their farm near Chelsea. On 4 Aug., 1862, Charles enlisted in Co. K of the 20th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment[3]. But according to Record of service of Michigan volunteers in the civil war, 1861-1865 he enlisted on 11 Aug., 1862 in Chelsea for 3 years age 23 mustered 18 Aug., same year and was discharged 26 Aug., 1863[4]. Sometime after his discharge, Charles married Frances Emma Harrington, but before Sept.,1864 as his daughter Julia Garner was born on 26 Sept., 1864 in Chelsea, Washtenaw Cty., MI.[5][6]. On 3 July, 1867 his son, Thomas Edward Snow was born. Charles was listed as a laborer[7].
By 1870, the Snow's had two young children living with them, along with his aged mother Elizabeth, Emma's very aged paternal grandmother, Lydia Harrington and a hired hand, Orville Burlingame who was related to James C Harington's first wife Almira Harrington. He was listed in Hannah C. Gardner's will[8]. They were living on what had been Charles's father's farm, now valued at $4,500 US dollars. On 11 July, 1874, daughter Alice was born. Charles and family were still living in Sylvan, Washtenaw Cty., MI. At that time he was listed as a laborer[9].
By June, 1880, the Snow family had moved to Day Tpw., Montcalm Cty., MI[10], where he worked as a carpenter. Charles again moved. This time to Allenville, Mackinac Cty., MI where he joined the GAR in St Ignace, Mackinac Cty. MI giving Allenville as his residence[11].

The 1845 Census for Sylvan Twp., Washtenaw Cty, MI lists James Snow, John Snow, Thomas Snow, Joseph Snow[12].

The 1850 Census for Sylvan Township, Michigan, listed Thomas & Elizabeth Snow's farm next door to another property, valued at $1,000, that was home to Thomas Snow's parents and 2 younger brothers, James and John Snow. James Snow, 35, was the Head of Household:[13]
Name......Role.......Sex....Age....Occupation......Birthplace:
James Snow, Head, M, 35, Farmer: $1,000, b: England
Mariett Snow, Wife, F, 27, New York
William H Snow, Son, M, 6, Michigan
Frances Emma Snow, Daughter, F, 3, Michigan
Elizabeth Snow, Daughter, F, 1, Michigan
John Whittinden, Lodger, M, 19, Ditcher, England
John Snow, brother, M, 30, Clerk, England
Elizabeth Snow, Mother, F, 71, None, England
Thomas Snow, Father, M, 70, Farmer (retired), England

In June 1860, James & Mariett (Mary) Snow, 46 & 34 years old, were still living on the farm next-door with their 3 children. The Snow parents (Thomas Sr. & Elizabeth) passed away between 1850-1860 and brother John Snow had moved out. On the June 1860 US Census, Charles D. Snow, 21 years old, indicating a 1839 birth, born in New York, USA, was still living with his parents: Thomas and Elizabeth (Unknown) Snow, 51 and 63 years old respectively, Sylvan, Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA. The Census report also states that Thomas Snow was born in England ca. 1809; in 1860 he farmed his own land, valued at $3,000 US dollars. He had an additional $2,000 value to his home and possessions, making him the 2nd wealthiest man on the Census sheet. His son, Charles, was a School-Teacher in Chelsea, Michigan. His wife, Elizabeth (?) Snow, had been born in New Jersey around 1797[14]. A James Snow in 1874 owned indeterminate amount of farmland acreage in western 1/2 of Section 2, eastern 1/2 of Section 3 and ne 1/4 of Section 10 of Sylvan Twp., Washtenaw Cty., MI[15].

The 1870 Census reported that Charles' uncle, farmer James Snow, born about 1815 in England, was still living nearby with his wife "Mary Ann" (sic="Mariett"), born ca. 1826 in New York. Their daughter Emma (Snow) Monroe, 22, was now married and living on their farm with her husband, George Monroe, 29 years old.[16] James' oldest son, William Snow, 26, now married to Emma (??) had his own farm and was living next to his 1st cousin, Charles D. Snow.

Ten years later, in 1880, "Chas D. Snow," 41 years old, had moved his family from Washtenaw County in south-east Michigan to Day Township, Montcalm County, 140 miles north in the north-central part of the state. He was reported working as a "Carpenter" there, living with his wife, Frances E. Snow, age 36, and two daughters: Julia Frances: 16 yrs., and little Alice Snow, 6 years old. Edward, who would have been 13, along with his 2 grand-mothers, must have passed away as they were no longer reported. Frances E. Snow was working as a "Milliner" or Ladies hat-maker. [17]. Charles D. Snow passed away while working on a building job away from home on May 13, 1891 in St. Ignace, Mackinaw Co., Michigan.[18] His body was shipped back to the Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea, Washtenaw County, Michigan, for burial.[19] Charles' wife, survived his passing for over 3 decades. She died in 1928 and was laid to rest next to her husband at the Oak Grove Cemetery, with the inscription: "wife of Charles D. Snow; daughter of James F. & Eliza Burden Harrington". The same cemetery plot also includes: Thomas Snow who died March 24, 1863, at 55 yrs., 4 mos., 13 days, Charles D. Snow's father. According to this record, Thomas Snow was born on November 11, 1807. He was born in England and immigrated to the USA as a child.[20]
