Biography

The Right Reverend George D'Oyly Snow was born on November 2, 1903, in Paddington, Middlesex (London), England. He was the 3rd child and 1st son of Sir Thomas D'Oyly Snow, a career British Army officer, and his wife, Charlotte Geraldine (Coke) Snow, a daughter of Major General John Talbot Coke & wife, Charlotte (FitzGerald) Coke.[1]

George D'Oyly Snow was, by his son Jon's estimate, over 6' 6" tall and an imposing man, as well as "distant" from his 3 sons. He was very well educated, first at St. Mary's College, Winchester (a Public School), and then at Oriel College, Oxford University, Oxford Shire, where he graduated in the early 1920s. [2] [3]

After a few years as an Assistant Master at Eton Public School, the rival of his Winchester College alma mater, he was ordained a priest in the Church of England. This allowed him to become the Chaplain of Charterhouse [Public] School in Surrey, and then the longstanding Headmaster of Ardingly College [another "public school"] in West Sussex (1947–1961). [4]

Rev. Snow was appointed Prebendary (Senior Priest) of Chichester Cathedral in Sussex in 1959 before being elevated as the 5th Suffragan Bishop of Whitby (Diocese of York) two years later (1961). A suffragan bishop is one whose See does not have a cathedral and who is subordinate to a regional diocesan bishop. The Right Reverend George D'Oyly Snow retained his post in Yorkshire for 11 years until 1972, when he retired at 69 years old. [5] [6]

Reverend George Snow married Miss Joan Monica Way on 30 March 1942 in Compton, Guildford, Surrey, England. She was a concert pianist who had studied at the Royal College of Music in London. They first lived in Surry near the Charterhouse School and then moved to Cuckfield, West Sussex, in 1947 when Snow became Headmaster of Ardingly College there. The couple had 3 sons:[7]

  1. Thomas D'Oyly Snow, b: March 1945 in Surrey
  2. Jonathan George "Jon" Snow, b: 28 Sep 1947 in Cuckfield, West Sussex, England
  3. Nicholas H. Snow, b: September 1949 in Cuckfield, West Sussex, England

After retirement, George and Joan-Monica (Way) Snow retired near London. He died there on November 17, 1977, at age 74. His wife survived his passing. Joan-Monica (Way) Snow died on January 7, 1999. [8]
