Name
Hulda Melissa Snow. [1]
Born:
Hulda Melissa Snow was born on June 27, 1824, most-likely in Cranberry Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Seth Snow III, b: 1780 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts. He had married his 1st cousin, Lydia Snow, b: about 1786 in Oneida County, New York. She was the daughter of his uncle Jonathan Snow and wife, Lydia (Perkins) Snow. This Snow family were descendants of Pilgrims William Snow and his wife, Rebecca Browne, daughter of Mayflower passenger, Peter Browne, early colonists in Plymouth, Massachusetts. After the American Revolution several brothers and sisters migrated from eastern Massachusetts to upstate New York, most settling on farms in Oneida County, where Seth & Lydia Snow were reported living on the 1820 US Census. [2]
Sometime around 1823 to 1824, Seth and Lydia packed up their family and headed south-west, setting up a family farm in Cranberry Township, Butler County, in western Pennsylvania, across the Appalachian Mountains. Others of this pioneer Snow family joined them by 1830. They were reported living there on that US Census and in 1840 also. Between 1840 and 1850, Seth & Lydia Snow moved again from Butler County 60 miles north-east to Rockland Township in Venango County, Pennsylvania. They were reported there on the 1850 US Census. By that time, Hulda M. Snow had married David Smith and they were also living in Rockland Township, Venango County. [3]
Alternately, Hulda Melissa Snow was born in Augusta, Oneida County, New York, and moved to Butler County, Pennsylvania, with her family as an infant. Since all her US Census records state she was born in Pennsylvania, this is the less-likely alternative. [4]
Marriage & Residence: 1850:
Hulda M. Snow married widower David Smith in 1846 in Venango County, Pennsylvania.[5] Born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in November 1811, he had pioneered Venango County with his parents before 1820. His 1st wife died April 19, 1946 and he remarried the same year. On the 1850 US Census, David & Hulda Smith's household was reported as follows: [6]

Ten years later, the 1860 Census had "corrected" David's age and now spelled Hulda's name "Huldah". The family was still living on their farm in Rockland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Sarah Smith had died and relative David McDonald had grown up and left home. David & Hulda had also added 5 new children to their household: [7]

Their farm was valued at $1,500 and personal items at $150, making them prosperous farmers in the Township (The total land value on their Census sheet for 7 households was $4,550; making their farm worth double the local average.).

Rockland Township, Venango, Pennsylvania. [8]
David and Huldah M. (Snow) Smith were still living on the same Rockland Township farm when the 1870 US Census was taken. This household was reported thus: [9]

The June 1, 1880 Census is the last one on which either David or Hulda Melissa (Snow) Smith appeared.[10] This time she was called "Malissa" and their son "Manuel" Smith. Several of their other children were also called by different names but their ages reveal who they were. The household was reported living in Rockwell Twp., Venango County, Pennsylvania, USA: [11]

Death & Burial:
Two months after the 1880 Census was taken, David Smith died on his farm in Venango County, Pennsylvania. He was 69 years old. Hulda survived his passing. She died on May 6, 1894, shortly before her 70th birthday. Both are buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Venango County, Pennsylvania, USA. David Smith's first wife, Nancy A. Smith (whose maiden name may have been McDonald), is buried next to them as is David's daughter Sarah Ann, who died at 18 years old in 1853 and at least 2 infants. [12] [13] [14] [15]
