Biography
William A. Snow Jr. was born on July 6, 1842 in Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA. His parents were William A. Snow, Sr., and his wife Abigail C. (Ball) Snow. His Snow pedigree goes back to Pilgrims, Nicholas Snow, and his wife, Mayflower passenger, Constance (Hopkins) Snow, and were early pioneers of England's Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, New England.[1]
According to the 1850 US Census, William A. Snow was 8 years old and living in his parents' household: [2]
William A Snow (Sr.), Head, M, 50, Harness Maker, Vermont
Abby C Snow, Wife, F, 44, Massachusetts
William A Snow Jr., Son, M, 18, Massachusetts
Abby E Snow, Daughter, F, 12, Massachusetts
John R P Snow, Son, M, 11, Massachusetts
Eva E Snow, Daughter, F, 6, Massachusetts
Ella E Snow, Daughter, F, 6, Massachusetts
When the US Civil War broke out in 1861, William A. Snow Jr., joined Company B, 2nd Regiment, Heavy Artillery, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia (Co. B., 2d Regt., H.A. - M.V.M is engraved on his tombstone) and fought for the Union. After the conflict and his military service ended, William married Maria J. Burke on January 1, 1868, in Belchertown, Massachusetts.[4]
On the 1870 US Census, two years later, he and Maria were reported living with another young couple working in the same trade in Belchertown:[5]
William E Bridgman, Head, Carriage Trimmer, M, 33, Massachusetts
Elizabeth Bridgman, Wife, F, 32, Keeps House, Massachusetts
William A. Jr. Snow, Lodger, M, 27, Carriage Trimmer, Mass.
Maria Snow, Wife, F, 22, None, Massachusetts
Grace M Snow, Daughter, F, b: 19 Sep. 1868, Massachusetts
Ten years later, in 1880, William, Maria and daughter Grace Snow, now 11 years old, were still living in Belchertown, in their own household. William was employed in a Carriage Shop, still plying his trade as a Carriage Trimmer. [6]
The 1890 US Census was accidentally destroyed so the next available one was enumerated in June 1900. William A. Snow, now 58 years old, was living with his 52-year-old wife, Maria J. Snow (b: Aug. 1847), in Belchertown, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Their daughter, 31 years old, was married and in her own household. William was now a Hotel Keeper in town. [7]
William A. Snow Jr. died of apoplexy on July 22, 1907, after a brief illness, at a hospital in Northampton, Massachusetts; his death certificate noted his last residence was in Belchertown, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He was laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery
Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA. [8][9]
