William Harvey Snow was born October 15, 1802 in South Carolina, USA. Although no birth records have been found to "prove" this lineage, it is likely that he was a grandson of William Snow, b: 26 Feb 1736, in Berkeley County, South Carolina colony, who was a son of Nathaniel Snow, Jr., b: 1704 in Goose Creek, Berkeley, S. C., and his wife, Ann (Farless) Snow. William Snow (1736) married Margaret Nesmith, b: 23 Dec. 1752 in Berkeley Co., S. C..[1]
William H. Snow married Mary (Polly Ann) Clapp, b: Sept. 6, 1806 in Madison County, Alabama Territory, USA. They were married in 1823 in Madison County, Alabama, USA. (Alabama became a state in 1819). At least one son, Calvin Neely Snow, was born ca. 1824 in Madison County, Alabama. After the birth of their eldest daughter, Sarah Melvina Snow (m. Wm. Thomas), in Alabama on 4 January 1829, the Snow family moved north to Graves County, Kentucky, where they bought a family farm.[2]
William Snow, age between 20-30, was recorded on the 1830 US Census in Graves County, Kentucky, married with a wife, 20-30 years, a son, 5-10, and 2 daughters, both under 5 years old.[3] The family was also recorded there on the 1840 and 1850 US Census reports: [4][5]
On the June 1860 US Census, William Snow was recorded with his wife and 4 children on their family farm, valued at $5,000, in Graves County, Kentucky, USA:[6]
Another son, W. P. [William Pitman] Snow, 27 years old, lived next door with his wife, Nancy (?) Snow, 24, and 6-month-old daughter, Araminta (sp?) Snow. Another son, John Washington Snow, age 27, his wife, Sallie (?) Snow, and 3 children: William (3), Alice (2), and Emily (6 months), lived on their other side. His farm was valued at $1,000. William's oldest son: C. N. [Calvin Neely] Snow, age 34, born in Alabama, ca. 1826, had a farm just a short distance away, valued at $600. He lived there with his wife, Sarah (?), 34, born in N.C., and 6 children: Mary (14); Martha (12); Nettie (9); William (6); Amanda (4); and Catherine, 2 years old. [7]
Son Francis Marion Snow, 21 in 1860, married Eliza Bridgeman, b: 28 Nov. 1844 in KY, after the Civil War ended in 1865. She was from a neighboring farm, daughter of James and Susan Bridgeman.
Five years later the 1870 US Census recorded William & wife Mary Snow, now in their 60s, as living & farming in Cuba Township, Graves, Kentucky, USA. Only their youngest daughter, Mary, now 22, was still living at home.[8]
Only their son, Francis M. Snow, now said to be 25 [sic=he was 31; b: 22 Nov. 1839], with his wife, Mary (Eliza) (Bridgman) Snow, age 22, lived next door, share-cropping with his father. They had 2 small children: Mary O., age 3; and James A. Snow, 2 years old.[9]
