John Lewis Snow was the son of Lewis Snow, b: ca. 1793 in Surry County, North Carolina. Lewis was a son of Frostin "Frost 'N" Snow, b: 1734 in Virginia, and his wife Ruth (Richards) Snow, b: 1752; they had married in 1773 in Virginia and had 10 children before 1800.[1]
Lewis Snow is said to have married Jane Richards, a possible relative of his mother's in Kentucky, where the family had moved around 1800. They probably married around 1830 and son John Lewis Snow was born on their farm on 14 February 1834.
John Lewis Snow, age 20, married Elizabeth Swearingen on 16 September 1854 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, USA. [2] According to FamilySearch, the couple had 10 children: [3]
In 1861, John L. Snow enlisted as a Private in the 19th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, in the Union Army during the US Civil War. [4]
After the Civil War, the 1870 US Census recorded John L. Snow as a 35-year-old married farmer in Precinct 4, Boyle County, Kentucky; his wife was 34-year-old Elizabeth Snow. The couple had 6 children (3 boys & 3 girls) living with them, ranging in age from 14 to 2 years old. [5]
Ten years later, on the 1880 US Census, John L. Snow was a "Farm Laborer," 40 years old, living on a rented farm in Precinct 5, Casey County, Kentucky, with his 38-year-old wife, Elizabeth Snow, and 6 children, ranging in age from 15 to 3 years old. Several of their older children had married and left home. [6]
Between 1880 and 1900 (the 1890 US Census was accidentally destroyed and so not available), John Lewis & Elizabeth Snow left Casey County, Kentucky, moving north to McLean County, Illinois. The 1 June 1900 US Census recorded him as age 65, married to Elizabeth Snow, 64 years old, living with her with their son Samuel Snow and his family in a rented house (not a farm) in Mount Hope Township, McLean County, Illinois. Samuel, 24 years old, was married to Della, age 19; they had an infant daughter, born Feb. 1900. He was a "Laborer on the Railroad". The Census also reported that John & Elizabeth had been married for 45 years and that Elizabeth Snow had had 11 children, 10 of whom were still living in June 1900. John Lewis Snow was a "Day Laborer".[7]
John Lewis Snow lived to be nearly 85 years old. He died on February 1, 1920, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. (Amanda "Tina" Snow) Levi Shifflet in Augusta, Logan, Illinois, only two weeks before his 85th birthday. He was buried at the McLean Cemetery, Mount Hope, McLean, Illinois.[8] His wife survived his passing but only until September 9, 1920, when she too passed away and was buried at the McClean Cemetery, next to her husband of over 60 years.
