Biography

Joel Snow was born on February 13, 1856 in Pennsylvania, USA. His parents were Lemuel Snow, b: ca. 1824 in Pennsylvania, and Martha Esther (Hoxsie) Snow, b: 1834 in Rhode Island (some Census reports say Connecticut).

On the 1860 US Census, Joel Snow was recorded as 4 years old, born in Pennsylvania, and living on his parents farm in Ararat Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, USA. His parents were L. F. Snow, 32 years old, born in Pennsylvania, his wife: E. Snow, age 26, born in Connecticut. Joel had a younger brother: E. Snow, 2 years old, born in Pennsylvania. The household also included an older sister: H. A. Snow, 7 years old, b: Pennsylvania, and an uncle: L. A. Snow, age 18, born in Pennsylvania. [1]

On the June 1, 1880 US Census, Joel Snow, age 24, was reported as a Farmer in Harmony Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was now married to Angeline [Churchill] Snow, 20 years old, and they had 2 small children: [2]

  1. Oscar Snow, b: January 1878 in Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania
  2. "Mertle" Snow, b: February 1880 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania

The 1880 Census mistakenly stated that Joel and his father were born in Wisconsin while it correctly said that his mother was from Rhode Island. Angeline and her parents were all born in Pennsylvania and they married there on January 29, 1877, indicating that Joel Snow was living in Susquehanna County at that time.[3]

In June 1880 he was reported living next-door to his younger brother, Edwin Snow, who was 22 and also said to have been born in Wisconsin. Edwin was also a Farmer, married to "Ellner [Eleanor] (Churchill) Snow," 24 years old from Pennsylvania, and living with their 1-year-old son, Russell Snow, who was born in Pennsylvania. Eleanor Churchill was Angeline's older sister by 4 years.[4]

The 1890 US Census original documents were accidentally destroyed so they are not available.

The 1900 US Census recorded Joel and Angeline Snow as now living on a family farm in Starrucca Borough, Scott Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Starrucca is about 18 miles from Ararat Township, Susquehanna County, where they were recorded in 1880. The household was reported as follows:[5]

NAME...........ROLE....SEX.....BIRTH........BIRTH STATE...OCCUPATION
Joel Snow, Head, M, Feb. 1856, Pennsylvania, Farmer
Angeline Snow, Wife, F, Feb. 1859, Pennsylvania
Oscar L Snow, Son, M, Jan. 1878, Pennsylvania, Farmer
Mertell [sic=Myrtle] Snow, Daughter, F, Feb. 1880, Pennsylvania
Ethel Snow, Daughter, F, May 1887, Pennsylvania
Ollena [sic=Olive] Snow, Daughter, F, July 1889, Pennsylvania
Florence Snow, Daughter, F, Aug. 1896, Pennsylvania

The 1900 US Census further reported that Joel & Angeline Snow had been married for 23 years (married in 1877); Angeline had had 5 children and all were living in April 1900; both Joel & Angeline were born in Pennsylvania; his father and both her parents were also from the Keystone state, while his mother was a native of Rhode Island. They owned their farm outright (no mortgage) and the family could read, write and speak English.[6] [7]

Ten years later, the 1910 US Census reported Joel & Angeline Snow's household, still in Scott Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, as follows: [8]

NAME............ROLE....SEX.....AGE........BIRTH STATE..OCCUPATION
Joel Snow, Head, M, 54, Pennsylvania, Dairy Farmer
Angeline E Snow, Wife, F, 50, Pennsylvania
Florence Snow, Daughter, F, 13, Pennsylvania
Doris E Snow, Daughter, F, 6, Pennsylvania

All of their older children had married or left home between 1900 and 1910. Angeline was reported to have had 6 children by 1910 and all were still living. Their farm was now said to be a Dairy Farm.

Between 1910 and 1920 Joel and Angeline Snow's household went through some major changes. Oldest son, Oscar Snow, b: 1878, married since about 1902, moved to Oregon with his family. Daughter Florence left home and got married, leaving only youngest daughter, Doris Snow, just 6 years old in 1910, still living at home. Most importantly, Joel and his wife Angeline separated so that they formed two distinct households in 1920. Joel Snow left Wayne County, Pennsylvania, moving about 20 miles north-west to Windsor Township in Broome County, New York. He was reported as 63 years old on the January 1, 1920 US Census, living on his own General Farm there. Other Snow family members lived nearby. [9]

Angeline (Churchill) Snow had also left her and Joel Snow's Starrucca, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, farm between 1910 and 1920. On the January 1920 US Census she was recorded as living in a rented house on Bridge Street in Lanesboro, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, with her 16-year-old daughter, Doris Snow. Angeline was reported working as a Nurse for a private family there. Doris was in school in Susquehanna County. [10]

Ten years later, on the June 1930 US Census, Angeline E. Snow was recorded as 70 years old, still married, now retired and living with her daughter Ethel (Snow) Messenger, age 42, and Ethel's family (husband John & 3 children), in Thompson borough, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. John Messenger, age 53, worked for the Railroad.[11] She was still living with them in Thompson in 1940, when she was reported to be 80 years old and a widow [sic = instead being declared Divorced, for Joel Snow was still alive]. [12]

Joel Snow, in the meantime, did not stay very long in Broome County, New York. On the 1925 New York State Census, he was reported as 69 years old, single and living on his own farm Butternuts Township, Otsego County, New York, USA. That is 45 miles north-east of his 1920 farm near Windsor, Broome, New York.[13]

Joel Snow was still farming his land in the Town of Butternuts, Otsego County, New York, at 74 years old, as recorded on the June 1930 US Census. [14]

Joel Snow, age 84, has not been located on the 1940 US Census for Otsego County, New York, or in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. However, he was definitely still living (despite Angeline Snow's declaring herself a "widow") because apparently he returned to his roots in Ararat Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, before his death on November 18, 1944. Joel Snow was buried at the Ararat Cemetery, Ararat, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, USA. He was 88 years old. [15] Angeline E. (Churchill) Snow, Joel's ex-wife and mother of his children, predeceased her ex-husband by about 18 months. She died in Thompson borough, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, on March 20, 1943. Angeline was buried at the Thompson Cemetery, Thompson, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, USA. [16]
