Fred Elsworth Lawrence Snow was born on 21 March 1870, in Athens County, Ohio the son of Madison Miles Snow and his wife Margaret Phoebe Snow (aka Phoebe M. Snow). Margaret's maiden name was also Snow and they were 2nd cousins. This extended Snow family descended from William Snow Sr., born in England around 1624, who emigrated to Plymouth Colony, New England, when still a lad, in 1635. He later married Rebecca Browne in Plymouth; as she was the daughter of Mayflower passenger, Peter Browne, their descendants qualify as Mayflower passenger descendants today.
Fred Elsworth Lawrence Snow was born on 21 March 1870 and not 21 March 1869 as was reported on his death certificate (Image on this profile). This is proven by the June 1, 1870 US Census, where the handwritten enumeration noted that "Frederick E. Snow" was "0" years old as of 1 June 1870 (he would have been "1" if born in March 1869) and that his parents had married in August 1869 (handwritten notation), making a March 1869 birth very-unlikely for a staunch Baptist family like the Snows. Fred's father, Madison M. Snow, 24 years old, was a Farmer. In June 1870 the couple were living with his wife's family: her father was Elijah W. Snow Jr. (aka "Morris Snow"), age 46, and Fred's mother was "Phoebe Margaret Snow," age 20, born in Ohio. They were living with Fred's Snow great-grandfather, Elijah W. Snow Sr., age 79, born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on his family farm. Elijah W. Snow Sr. was Madison Snow's grandfather Barnabas Snow's younger brother.[1] [2]
As of June 1, 1880, 9-year-old Fred L. Snow had moved to Ozark Township, Franklin County, Arkansas. That year's Census recorded him living in the town of Ozark with father "M.M. Snow," age 33, a Carpenter; his wife, also "M.M. Snow," age 30, a Milliner; and 2 younger siblings: Alice Snow, age 8; and Willie Snow, age 6; all three children and their mother were born in Ohio whereas their father, Madison M. Snow was born in Pennsylvania and his father: Salmon Snow, in New York state.[3] The 1890 US Census was accidentally destroyed and not available.
"Fred Laurence Snow" married Sarah Vallie Mackall on 16 June 1892 in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia, USA.[4] Sarah Vallie Mackall's father had moved his large family (17 children) from Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where Vallie was born in August 1869, to Belpre, Washington County, Ohio, near the Ohio River boundary with West Virginia. Fred and Vallie lived with them shortly after their marriage. Then they moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa and then to Jackson County, Minnesota in the 1890s.
Fred and Vallie (Mackall) Snow were the parents of 11 children, 9 of whom reached maturity.[5]
On the 1895 Minnesota State Census, Fred L. Snow was recorded as 25 years old, living in Minneota Twp., Jackson County, Minnesota, with his wife "Vallie," and their first 2 daughters: Alice, age 2, born in Ohio, and Mary, 2 months old, born in Iowa. Also in the household were his mother, Margaret Snow, 44 years old, and Fred's younger brother: William Wesley Snow, 21 years old, both born in Ohio. Both Fred and William were "Farming" and they both declared they had been living in Minneota Township, Jackson County, Minnesota, for the last 7 months (since November 1894). Fred and his wife had previously lived in Washington County, Ohio, then Spirit Lake, Iowa, and only moved to Jackson County, Minnesota, after his father's death, to be with his widowed mother & younger brother.[6]
Fred and Vallie Snow did not stay in Minnesota for long. Between July 1896 and January 1899, Fred and Vallie Snow moved their growing family back east. They first settled in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia, where Fred worked in a Coal Mine. On the June 1, 1900 US Census, Fred L. Snow was recorded living with his wife and four children in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia:

By 10 years later, as of the June 1910 US Census, Fred and Vallie Snow had moved their family to Columbiana County, Ohio. They moved there before May 1902 when their son Theodore E. Snow was born. Their oldest daughter Alice had married at 17 years old and had her own home; 8 of their children now lived with them:[8]

The 1910 Census also revealed that Vallie Snow had had 11 children during her 17-year marriage (since 16 June 1892) but only 9 were still living as of 1 June 1910.
Fred must have spent some time away from his family during these years as he was also recorded on the 1905 Iowa State Census, living in Polk County, working as a "Coal Miner" there. No family was reported with him. [9]
On the January 1920 US Census, Fred and Vallie Snow were recorded as living in Center Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Four of their sons and two daughters were still living at home. Fred was working as a "Mixer," in the local Rubber Works; two of his sons were employed in the local Pottery Factory. Columbiana County was famous for its pottery manufacture in the early 20th Century and Firestone Rubber was becoming a major industry in nearby Youngstown as automobiles and trucks began to dominate American transportation.[10] [11]
In the late 1920s, Fred L. Snow was the Night Watchman at the Hadley Motor Sales Company in Lisbon, county seat of Columbiana County, Ohio. He suddenly and unexpectedly passed away at 58 years old from a heart attack, on 9 January 1929 at a local gas station in Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio. He was buried at Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio, USA.[12] [13]
Fred's wife, Sarah Vallie (Mackall) Snow survived her husband's untimely passing. On the 1930 US Census she was recorded as a 60-year-old widow, still living in their home on Pleasant Heights, Lisbon, Columbiana, Ohio. Next door lived her daughter Mary Matilda "Tillie" (Snow) Robinson and her family. Tillie's husband worked in the Pottery factory. [14]
Ten years later, the April 1940 US Census, the last publicly available, recorded widow Sarah Snow, age 70, as still living in the same home in Lisbon, Ohio. Two of her daughters, unmarried school-teacher, Florence Snow, age 40, and eldest daughter, Alice Margaret (Snow) Vargo, 46, lived with her along with Alice's husband, John Vargo, and their 5 children. John was working for the W.P.A. and one of his sons worked in the Pottery factory.[15] Sarah Vallie (Mackall) Snow passed away on 2 January 1957 at 87 years old. She was buried next to her husband at the Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio, USA.[16]
