Biography

Middlesex (historic flag)
William (Snow) Strahan was born in Middlesex, England.

William Strahan (21 August 1807 – 2 July 1886), formerly William Snow, was an English first-class cricketer active from 1832 to 1849 who played for Surrey. He was born in Westminster and died in Perugia. He appeared in 26 first-class matches as a batsman who did not bowl. He scored 272 runs with a highest score of 22 not out and held five catches.

William Snow Strahan was born on Friday 21 August 1807 at 6am in Westminster, London, baptized 20 September 1807, Thomas Snow and Richard Thomas Streatfield were his Godfathers and Elizabeth Denne his Godmother

William was the son of a banker, Robert Snow, and his wife, Margaret Strahan. He was born on 21st August 1807, probably at Saville Row, London, and was baptised on 20th September 1807 at St James Piccadilly, Middlesex.[1]

William was educated at Eton College, followed by Cambridge University, and matriculated in 1826. He was admitted to the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1830 and became a banker, before changing his surname to Strahan in 1831[2].

Whilst at Cambridge, William was one of the founding members of the historic Lady Margaret Boat Club of St John's College, formed in 1825.[3]He was a Cambridge rowing blue and crew member in the inaugural Boat Race in 1829 between Cambridge and Oxford Universities.[4]

On 9th February 1837, William married Elizabeth Anne Dorothea Fisher, daughter of the late Sir George Fisher, in the Charterhouse Chapel, Finsbury, London[5]. Six children of the marriage have been identified.

William was a partner in the banking firm, Snow, Strahan and Paul, which failed in 1855 when he was convicted of fraud[6]. Although he was sentenced to transportation for 14 years, he was imprisoned in England instead[7].

Following his release from prison, William lived with his family at Blackmore Hall, in Sidmouth, Devon.[8] [9]

William lived his later life in Florence, Italy, and died at Perugia in 1886.[10]
