The son of Robert Snyder and Mary (Fegley) Snyder, Roy Snyder was born in either Mahanoy City, in Schuylkil County, or in Elk Township, in Tioga County, in 1889.[citation needed] In 1900, his family lived in Elk Township, farming there.[1] They left farming and moved to Galeton, Pennsylvania, in Potter County, where Roy, his father, and his brother, Edward, all worked for the steam railroad.[2]
His mother died in 1925 and his father in 1927; in 1930, Roy headed a household in Galeton that included his brothers, Edward and Harry, and his sisters, Olive and Hazel. Roy worked for the steam railroad as a stationary engineer; Edward worked as an engine hostler; and Hazel worked as a glove maker at a glove factory.[3] In 1940, Roy, still working as a stationary engineer, lived in a household headed by his nephew, Harry, the son of his widowed brother, Edward. Harry worked as a public school teacher. The household also included his brother, Edward, a railroad engineer, and his sister, Olive, who kept house.[4]
Roy Snyder passed away around the age of 85 and is buried at West Hills Cemetery in Galeton, Pennsylvania.[5]
