Biography

Sarah Snyder was born on December 23, 1836 in Blanchard, Centre County, Pennsylvania, USA [1] to Henry Snyder and Sarah Steiner.[2]

Sarah Snyder can be found at the age of 13 on the 1850 US census for Morris, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, along with her father, Henry, age 50, his wife, Catherine Snyder, and some of Sarah's presumed siblings. Based on the children that her father, Henry Snyder, named in his Last Will and Testament, it seems likely that none of the children who were younger than Sarah on this census were actually Henry's own biological children, or they died before the will was recorded. Older brother, Abraham, was named in the will, and Jacob, another potential older brother MAY be actually have been named "John Jacob". If so, Jacob was also named in the will as one of Henry Snyder's children, with the name "John".[3]

Sarah Dehaas was named as Henry Snyder's daughter by her father, Henry Snyder in his Last Will and Testament, recorded in Clinton County, Pennsylvania USA, on October 12, 1877. According to the wording of the will, at that time, he was "of" Salona, Pennsylvania, USA.

Sarah was described in Henry Snyder, Sr's Last Will and Testament, (below) as his "daughter Sarrah, the wife of Philip Dehas."

Below is an attempt at a transcript of the will as shown on the photocopied document. The names have been put in bold print to aid in identifying the individuals within, but otherwise it is transcribed to reflect the will as written, as closely as possible:

This the last will and testament of me Henry Snyder of Salona Pennsylvania made and executed this the (12) Twelfth day of October in the year of our Lord, Eighteen Seventy Seven (1877). First I will that all such just debts as shall be by me owing togather (sic) with my funeral expenses and all charges touching the proving of or otherwise concerning this my will shall in the first place out of my personal estate and effects be fully paid and satisfied, and from and after payment thereof and subject thereto, my will is that my wife Harriet Snyder shall have Three Hundred Dollars to be paid by my executor herein after appointed, either in Real Estate or in Personal Property, or both as she may select. Also all the household and kitchen furniture, all rents that be received for my Buther (sic) Shop in Salona, and to live free of rent in my house in which I now live also all interest that may come into the hands of my said executor from bonds of Danl Snyder or otherwise. She my said wife Harriet Snyder to pay all taxes that may be assessed against the said property or otherwise and also to have the said house properly insured against loss by fire, and in case my said wife marries again then the said rents and interest of money shall cease.
After the death of my said wife Harriet or inter marrying again, then my will is that the said property Real or Personal be sold by my Executor and the proceeds be equally divided between my seven children, share, and share alike. To Wit. To my son George Snyder one seventh less Twenty Dollars . One Seventh to my son Danl Snyder. One Seventh to my son Henry Snyder, less Forty Dollars. To my Son John Snyder one seventh. To my son Abraham Snyder one seventh. One Seventh to the heirs of my daughter Susan Kastater, Deceased. One seventh to my daughter Sarrah, now married Philip Dehas.
I heareby appoint John P Heard my sole Executor of this my last will and testament and fully empower him my said executor to sell any or all my Real Estate and to make a good and sufficient Deed for the same.

Henry Snyder X (His Mark). (Legal Seal)

Signed, sealed, published and declared by the above name(d) Henry Snyder to be his last will and testament, in the presence of me, who at his request, and in his presence, have subscribed our names as witnesses, thereunto.

Note: Some of the names have been transcribed at Ancestry.com, differently from the interpretation of the names given above. Son "Danl" (believed here to be "Daniel", abbreviated), has been transcribed "Darrel". Son Henry (Jr.) has been transcribed "Herry". Daughter Sarah (the wife of Philip DeHaas), or "Dehas", has been completely omitted from the facts transcribed at Ancestry. That is, only six of the seven children explicitly mentioned as sharing in the 1/7 share of Henry's estate are listed in Ancestry's transcribed summary version of the will.

Sarah DeHaas ("Sarrah Tehaas") can be found at the age of 41 on the 1880 US census for Liberty Twp., ED 217, Centre County, Pennsylvania, along with her husband, Philip DeHaas ("Tehaas"), and their children, James Irvin ("Irvin I"), Philip E., Curtis Oscar ("Osker C."), Emma J., Sarah L. ("Sarrah D."), Ernest Wilsey ("Willsie E."), and Rosa DeHaas, ("Rona Tehaas"). Note that, although the name is transcribed "Tehaas", the photocopied image appears to show that the "T" was a "D" on the original, and the name is probably accurately written "DeHaas". Most of the writing was faint and difficult to decipher.

A note about the 1900 US census image 17 (below) for Liberty Twp., Centre County, Pennsylvania: Some of the names, as transcribed on this census page, are clearly not correct. The photocopy of the page reveals that the original writing of the census taker was extremely faint. At some later date, a person tallying the census numbers came through with an extremely heavy hand and a much darker writing implement, often writing directly over the tops of the names. The dark numbers, mixed with the very faint original writing, made many of the names nearly unreadable.

In the table below, for example, the name transcribed "Barney Fraule" is likely "Irving Fravel", a known son-in-law of Philip and Sarah DeHaas, who married their daughter, Rosie. The name "Fravel" appears to have been actually spelled "Fravle" on the original, although it IS difficult to make out clearly.

Sarah DeHaas can be found at the age of 63 on the 1900 US census for Liberty Twp., ED 23, Centre County, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Philip E. DeHaas, in the household of their daughter, Rosie, and son-in-law, Irvin Fravel ("Barny Fraule"). According to the census, Philip and Sarah DeHaas had been married for 45 years. Sarah had given birth to eleven children in her lifetime, but only seven of them were living when the census was taken. Their daughter, Rosie, and her husband, Irvin had been married for 3 years, and Rosie had given birth to only one child, (Sarah C.), who was alive when the census was taken.

Sarah DeHaas can be found at the age of 73 on the 1910 US census for Liberty, ED 24, Centre County, Pennsylvania, in the household of her daughter Rosie A Fravel ("Fravil") and son-in-law, Irvin H. Fravel ("Fravil"), along with their children; a DeHaas relative, and a 2-year-old child who was described as a boarder. According to the census, Sarah had given birth to 11 children, but only 7 survived until the 1910 census was taken. Her daughter, Rosie, and son-in-law Irvin had been married for 13 years, and Rosie had given birth to 5 children, who were all accounted for on the 1910 census.

Sarah DeHaas' Pennsylvania death certificate # 7750, states that she was born on December 23, 1836 in Pennsylvania, to Henry Snyder and Sarah (Steiner) Snyder, who were both born in Pennsylvania themselves. Sarah DeHaas was the widow of Philip DeHaas. According to the death certificate, Sarah died on January 18, 1926 in Lock Haven, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, in the Lock Haven hospital. The informant listed on her death certificate was her son, J. I. DeHaas.[2]

According to her Findagrave memorial page, which can be viewed at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/133102477/sarah-dehaas, Sarah Snyder DeHaas died at the age of 89 on January 18, 1926 in Lock Haven, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, and was buried in the Liberty Baptist Cemetery in Blanchard, Centre County, Pennsylvania. NOTES

There is circumstantial, but by no means conclusive evidence that Sarah DeHaas may have been the sister of Abraham Snyder, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Snyder-6922. Sarah (born Snyder) DeHaas. Sarah may be the 13-year-old girl on this 1850 US census for Morris, Clearfield County, born about 1837, along with Abraham Snyder and several siblings, in the household of their father, Henry Snyder, and mother -- or, perhaps a stepmother.

Sarah (Snyder) DeHaas's death certificate identifies her mother as Sarah Steiner,[2] which does not match the given name of the woman on the 1850 census--although Catherine may have been Sarah Steiner's middle name -- or Catherine may have been another wife of Henry Snyder.
