Biography

Benjamin Snyder grew up on his father's farm and attended the Bloomingdale school. He resided on the west half of his father's farm and continued to live in the two-storey frame house (see his father's profile for more information). Soon after his marriage, a small 1-and-a-half storey brick house was erected for his widowed mother who lived here until her death in 1869. Different members of the family lived here in intervals.

In 1872, a two-storey, ten-room brick house was built. James Turel was the builder. This was situated on the hill, and this caused him to be known as "Hivel Ben" (Ben on the hill), and also to distinguish him from River Ben. Her served on the (Woolwhich?) Township Council in 1879. Mixed farming was the favourite method of agriculture at this time. Members of the family supplied the labour and was a unit that provided a good living for all. His children were born and raised here. They attended the Bloomingdale Public School and the United Brethren Church in the village nearby. A grand-daughter, Mrs. Horace Mann, remembers Benjamin Snyder as being of medium height, sandy complexion, and he wore a beard.

On 2 October 1886, he purchased 103 acres of the eastern portion of Lot 11 of the James Wilson Tract from his brother Dilman (see Dilman's profile for more information). This land was settled on and worked by his son Wellington. Benjamin purchased the remaining 83 acres of Dilman's Lot 11 property, plus the six-acre portion of Lot 67 of the German Company Tract, on 12 October 1899 which was settled on by his son George.

One by one the members of the family were married and left the community. Joanna, Sarah, and Samuel Addison remained unmarried. Benjamin and his wife are buried in the Mennonite Cemetery, Bloomingdale.[1]
