Biography

Alice was the daughter of Francis Peol Sockalexis and Frances Sockbeson.

She is not in the 1880 Census with her family so it is probable she was born after the 1880 Census. Or Alice and Mary are the same person.

She married Thomas P Pennywaite Nov 19, 1899 on Indian Island, Old Town, Maine, United States.[1] They had three daughters,

  1. Frances,
  2. Catherine
  3. Isabell M.
  4. Joseph (died shortly after birth)
  5. Lewis Raymond (died shortly after birth)

The Alice and Thomas were found living with in-laws in the US 1900 Census.(mispelled surnames)[2] The household is as follows:

Francis Locklexis Head M 55 Maine
Louis Locklexis Son M 28 Maine
Alice Perrewate Daughter F 26 Maine
Thomas Perrewate Son-in-law M 33 Maine
Charles M Swassian Half-brother M 36 Maine

The family is found in the 1910 Maine US Census.(surnames are mispelled)[3] The household at the time was as follows:

Thomas Penewate Head M 43 Maine
Alace M Penewate Wife F 36 Maine
Francis Penewate Daughter F 9 Maine
Catherine Penewate Daughter F 7 Maine
Isabell M Penewate Daughter F 0 Maine
Charles M Swasson Boarder M 48 Maine (Half Uncle to Alice)
Louis Sycklexis Boarder M 38 Maine (brother to Alice)

The family is found in the 1920 US Census in Maine.[4] The household is as follows"

Thomas Pennewaite Head M 52 Maine
Alice Pennewaite Wife F 42 Maine (puts yob as 1878)
Frances Pennewaite Daughter F 19 Maine
Catherine Pennewaite Daughter F 17 Maine
Isabell M Pennewaite Daughter F 9 Maine
Charles Swasson Boarder M 59 Maine (Half Uncle to Alice)

Alice died in her 50's, the attached records says 51 however it is probably incorrect. Alice was buried in the Penobscot Indian Cemetery.[5]
