My grandfather, Claude Oscar Sockwell, was a Medic in WWI and was assigned to the Medical Detch., 101st Amm. Train in France. I have his portrait, his dog tag, his Medic patch, Soldier's prayer book, etc., all of his letters written home, and his French Croix de guerre medal (but not the ribbon). His war records were lost in the fire of 1973 at the NPRC. I contacted them and received verification that they were among those that were destroyed.

I have seen mention of possible French military records regarding their awarding of the French medal to U.S. soldiers and that citations were required to award the medal. Does anyone know where/if these records are available? This medal required having received at least one citation and each citation is indicated on the ribbon. I would love to know to know the nature of his citation(s). My grandfather was a quiet, hardworking, humble and very loving man. He never voluntarily spoke of the war to us grandchildren and would not go into many details when we asked him about it. He would mainly tell us about his journey back to the states and being in New York with all the ticker tape being thrown down to the troops returning. We didn't even know about the dog tag, medal, etc, nor did my mother or her siblings. We found those after his death. We did know he was a medic because he was also our "medical" person in the family. He would talk to us about his medical knowledge/training from the war but never gave details of the wounded/killed soldiers or the terrible things he must have experienced. I guess you can tell that I loved my grandfather very much! I grew up next door to my grandparents and saw them everyday. Both had a huge influence on me and I also entered the medical field in nursing, primarily due to my admiration for my grandfather.

If anyone knows how I can gain access to the WWI medal records in France, I would surely appreciate it!!!

Thanks! Dr. Wanda Bradford

Name: Claude Sockwell
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 29 Oct 1926
Marriage Place: Tuscumbia, Colbert, Alabama
Spouse: Elizabeth Fuller
FHL Film Number: 1031266
Reference ID: p. 221

Died

Birth: Apr. 10, 1895 Bethsaida, Franklin County, Alabama, USA
Death: Sep. 25, 1976 Russellville, Franklin County, Alabama, USA

Claude was a very kind, soft-spoken man who was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was never critical of others and was known to tell his children and grandchildren to "Remember that you are just as a good as anyone else, but you are better than no one." He was a retired farmer who worked the land that his grandfather purchased in 1866. During the Depression, he supplemented his income by also working on WPA projects.

Claude served in France during WWI as a Medic. He was last assigned to the Medical Detch., 101st Amm. Train. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre (English translation: Cross of War) medal bestowed by France. The medal is awarded to those who have been "mentioned in despatches", meaning a heroic deed or deeds were performed meriting a citation from an individual's headquarters unit.

His training as a Medic later helped him to save the life of his second child, Mary, who was born at home. Her birth was a very difficult one and she was born lifeless with mother suffering serious complications. The doctor asked Claude if he wanted him to try to save his wife or the baby. Claude replied to save his wife. Then, Claude began working with the baby. He placed a piece of guaze over her mouth and began forcing air into her lungs. After a few moments, she began crying! Both mother and baby survived.

He and Elizabeth married on Oct. 29, 1926 in a parsonage in Tuscumbia by a Bro. Edwards. They had four children and 7 grandchildren.

Children: Lacy Elbridge Sockwell, Mary Elizabeth Sockwell Quinn, Charles O'Neal Sockwell, Doris Kathron Sockwell Craig.

He was a member of Bethsaida Baptist Church.
