Mortkhel was born about 1842 in Birzai, Panavezys, Lithuania, which was then part of the Russian Empire. His father was Gerts Sokhen.[1]
Mortkhel married Elka Unknown[1]
and they had at least ten children (see Notes).
After Elka's death,[2]
Mortkhel married Sora Gita (Grek) Brezniker, a widow with six children, June 19, 1897 in Pasvalys, Panevezys, Lithuania.[3]
In 1908, a Lithuanian family list shows Mortkhel as the patriarch of a very large extended family that included his wife, seven of his children, two daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren.[4]
Mortkhel died of nephritis January 2, 1913 in Pasvalys, Panevezys, Lithuania (see Notes) and was buried there in the Posvol Jewish cemetery.[5]
