In 1900 Sofie Gulbrandsdatter married Frithjof Kellin (Kehli/Solberg) and had four children with one dying in Norway before 1904. Her children were Alfa Marie Solberg (Olfar), Knud Sebjørn Fritjof Solberg and Gerhardt Axel Solberg. At that time Fritjof last name and that of family was Kellin he was listed as born on Solberg Aas. His occupation was electrician. Frithjof Ingvald Kehli name changed again when he immigrated to Canada and then came into USA, maybe traveling to Wadena. He must have died between 1903 and 1904 because when Sofie emigrated in 1904 to United States with her very young children she was listed as a widow. Records seem to show she did not always have all her children living with her at same time. In the 1905 Wisconsin state census she was living in Pleasant Valley, Wisconsin with Hunte (Knut, it was misspelled when digitized) but other children were not living with her. By 1910 she moved to St Paul and ran a boarding house at 830 Simpson near Hamlin University. In 1912 she was then running a boarding house on Montgomery Ave., St Paul with her son Knut working as a clerk and daughter Alfa as a housekeeper. At that time Frank Schley was a laborer who lived on 2132 University Ave, St. Paul.

She married Frank Schley on Dec. 31, 1912. He became proprietor of the Midway House at 2327 Charles St., St. Paul. The Minneapolis Tribune and Salt Lake Tribune (April 4, 1913) reported Frank Schley shot at her at the Midway Boarding House. Also, when police were called he shot at them. No record of an arrest. The Minneapolis article said Frank reported to police officers, J. T. Coughlin and J. Murphy, he was mad at his step-daughter, Alfa, for sweeping and creating dust so shot at his wife to scare her. It was reported in Salt Lake paper he said, “She is not my wife any more. I can take my medicine as well as Olson.” He was referring to a U of M professor who on March 5 shot and killed Clyde Darling when he learned the latter had been intimate with his wife. Sophie must have forgiven Frank as later their daughter, Frances Sophie Schley, was born on Dec. 6, 1913 and baptized on Jan 18,1914 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN.

In 1918 both Frank and Knut had to register for the military and were living at 2364 Territorial Road with Sofie.  Frank worked as a laborer at the Midway Creamery on Como, Ave across from Fairgrounds..

In 1920 census, Sophie and Frances are listed with Frank at a boarding house called the American Hotel. In another census by a different census taker, Sophie and her daughter Frances Sophie were living in a house with her other daughter, Alfa Solberg at 2364 Territorial Road, St. Paul. Not sure why the census shows two places of residents but quite possible one was a private home. Duane said he has seen this before with other census research he does.

In 1930 census Sophie, Frances and Frank were living on Cromwell Ave, St. Paul and Frank worked in a sheet iron manufacturing company. Frank died March13, 1939 and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery, St. Paul. Sophie died in1956 was also buried at Roselawn.

Alfa was born on Sept. 26, 1896 in Norway. On June 11, 1927 she married a Richard Nathaniel Gibson and they had Warren Frederick. She died January 13, 1947 in San Francisco, CA.

Gerhard was not listed as living with Sofie once she came to United States. Quite possibly he was living with a relative or another family in Wisconsin. Gerhard was a farmer when he registered for draft. Gerhardt married Helen Olson from Eau Galle Township, St. Croix, Wisconsin. They lived there until they died. On Gerhards death certificate Sofie’s name was listed as Hennington an obvious mistake as she was sister of George Hennington not child. Helen was a long time member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin, WI. They had four children, Fred, George, Herbert and Shirley. Their daughter, Shirley, married Aloys Busch and they eventually moved to Tucson, Arizona where she died.

Knut was born July 19, 1902. He was a seaman on the Great Lakes and then became an ocean mariner. He was buried on Staten Island, New York in 1977. He was 5’8” and 165 lbs.

Frances Sophie Schley apparently never married and sometime after 1930 moved to Tennessee. In 1951 she had a Tennessee home deeded to her by Eleanor Hamilton Gardino. She died in 1981 and was buried at Memphis Memory Garden. Her home eventually went to Mary Theresa Morgan, Beverly Robinett, Shirley Busch, Hazel Solberg (Gerhardt’s wife) and Warren Gibson. Warren (Alfa son).

Alfa Marie Solberg's mother was Sophie Gilbertson and father Frithjof Solberg. Sophie had three four children one who died in Norway. Her husband also died there and she immigrated to USA in 1904 with Alfa, Gerhard and Knud (Knute). They ended up in Wisconsin but by 1910 Sophie ran a boarding house and eventually married Frank Schley. Alfa lived with her mother and eventually became a nurse. She worked at St. Lukes Hospital, St. Paul. I have more information if requested.
