Biography

Johann Albrecht Count of Solms-Braunfels (also Johann Albert I of Solms-Braunfels) (* March 5, 1563 at Braunfels Castle ; † May 14 , 1623 in The Hague ) was a grand steward of the Electorate of the Palatinate and a close advisor to the Elector Frederick V of the Palatinate and Privy Councilor in the Service of the Bohemian King .

Johann Albrecht Graf von Solms-Braunfels came from the noble family Solms-Braunfels and was the eldest of nine children of Count Konrad von Solms-Braunfels (1540-1592) and his wife Elisabeth Countess von Nassau-Dillenburg (1542-1603).

On May 12, 1590 he married Agnes Countess of Sayn-Wittgenstein (1568-1617) in Braunfels. The marriage produced twelve children (six died in infancy):

  • Frederick Casimir (1591–1595)
  • Elisabeth (1593–1637) ⚭ 1619 Wolfgang Friedrich Wild- and Rheingraf in Dhaun
  • Ursula (1594–1657) Stadtholder in Orange ⚭ Christoph von Dohna , Burgrave
  • Konrad Ludwig (1595–1635), father's successor ⚭ Anna Sybille Freiin von Winneburg und Beilstein (1595–1635)
  • Johann Albrecht II (1599–1647), general of the artillery of the States General ⚭ Anna Elisabeth von Daun and Falkenstein (1615–1706)
  • Amalie (1602–1675) ⚭ April 4, 1625 Frederick Henry of Orange , governor in Holland, Zeeland. She was the mother-in-law of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg and the grandmother of King Wilhelm III. of England and Frederick I of Prussia .
  • Louise Christina (1606–1669) ⚭ Johann Wolfart van Brederode

After the death of his first wife, he married Juliana, Countess of Nassau-Dillenburg (1565–1630) on February 8, 1619. This marriage remained childless.

Johann Albrecht studied at the Universities of Strasbourg , Geneva , Basel and Herborn . He became co-regent over his father's estates and in 1602 Electoral Grand Chamberlain . In this function he was the supreme Minister of State and Court. He advanced to become a close adviser to Elector Friedrich V of the Palatinate. In 1621 he followed him in his exile in The Hague. Since the imperial ban was imposed on him in the course of the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War , Friedrich sought refuge with his relatives in the Netherlands.

Johann Albrecht died in The Hague on May 14, 1623.
