Biography

Isadore was a son of William and Rebecca Solomon, natives of Romania. Their first U.S.-born child, he was born in Chicago on 4 October 1910. The birth registration does not include his first name. It identifies his parents as William Solomon, 30, and Becky Siegal, 28.[1]

In January 1920, the 1920 U.S. Census recorded William and Rebecca Solomon, ages 39 and 38, in Chicago, Illinois, with children Morris, 17; Harry, 15; Isadore, 9; Dorothy, 8; Mollie, 5 years and 4 months; and Sam, 1 year and 1 month. William, Rebecca, Morris, and Harry were reported to be natives of Roumania and native speakers of Yiddish, while the younger children were born in Illinois. William was reported to be a tailor working in a tailor shop.[2]

The 1930 U.S. Census recorded 19-year-old "Edward" Solomon in the household of William Solomon, age 50 and a tailor, at 1617 S. St. Louis Ave. in Chicago. Family members of William Solomon were wife Betty Solomon, 48; and children Edward Solomon, 19; Dorothy Solomon, 18; Molly Solomon, 15; and Sam Solomon, 11. (The names "Betty" and "Edward" are likely to be americanized versions of Rebecca and Isadore.) William and Betty were born in Roumania and had immigrated in 1907 and 1910, respectively; the children all were born in Illinois. William was 20 at his first marriage and Betty was 18. Edward was single and a salesman, while his sister Dorothy was a stenographer for "WFarCo" (Wells Fargo Company?). William owned their home, valued at $15,000.[3]
