Biography

Charlotte was baptised 31 May 1796 at St Pauls Anglican church, Halifax, Nova Scotia, her father Capt John Solomon, Royal NS Regiment, mother Elizabeth.

She married John Kenneth MacKenzie on 17 May 1815 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at St Paul's Anglican church, bachelor and spinster, by Dr Stanser, reported in a Halifax newspaper, the Arcadian Recorder on 27 May 1815, which mentions that Charlotte is the youngest daughter of John Solomon, Esq. The marriage bond had the bondsmen: John Kenneth McKenzie Lieut H M Fourth Regiment of Foot (the groom) and the Honorable Charles Morris of Halifax (Charlotte's uncle).

They had up to 15 children together between 1816 and 1841. John was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 4th Regiment.

They emigrated to New South Wales, Australia in 1832 on the "Clyde".

John became a farmer in NSW, starting in Monaro then "Nerriga" on the Endrick River between Nowra and Braidwood in NSW.

John died in 1857.

Charlotte passed away in 1875.

Her death certificate has the following information: Died 5 Oct 1875 Coodra Vale, Charlotte MacKenzie, age 79, of old age. Born Halifax, Nova Scotia, parents John Solomon, Military Captain and Elizabeth formerly Morris. Married Halifax age 20 to John Kenneth MacKenzie. 43 years in NSW.

Death notice: S Ryrie. Esq., Charlotte, relict of the late Lieutenant-Colonel Mackenzie, of H. M. 4th, or King's Own Regiment, aged 78 years. [Evening News Sydney 2nd Nov 1875]

Probate 4 Dec 1879: late of Coodra Vale Yass widow d 5 Oct 1875 at Coodra Vale granted to her son Hugh Mackenzie of Royal Military Asylum Chelsea in County of Middlesex a Lieutenant Colonel in Her Majesty's Army, (estate less than 450 pounds). (Hugh Mackenzie was Lt Col and Commandant of the Royal Military Asylum, Kings Road & Cheltenham Terrace Chelsea)
