Biography

Origins

Thomas Solomon was probably born in St Columb Minor in Cornwall, England, perhaps the son of another Thomas Solomon and his wife Ann (nee Endayne)and was baptised 19 May 1662 at St Columb Minor. Nothing more is known about his youth or early adulthood.

Family

Thomas' will (see below) names eight children, Ann, Henry, Francis, Jane, Rachel, Mary, Thomas-Samuel & Richard, presumably in birth order, but ascertaining who was the mother of the children is difficult because there were several Thomas Solomon around this period. Also baptisms often only recorded the father's name and not the mothers, only his younger children are recorded as being the children of Thomas and Joan or Joane. Looking at naming patterns and obviously appropriate dates the current conclusion is that Thomas was married three times and had children with all three wives.

First marriage and children

His first wife was probably Ann Parkin or Perkin

They had several children, and from the will, Ann, Henry and Francis definitely belong in this family, but either or both of Thomas and Mary may be the children of a different Thomas Solomon.

  1. Ann Solomon, baptised 16 November 1684 at St Columb Minor;[1]
  2. (?)Thomas Solomon, baptised at St Columb Minor 4 November 1685;[2]
  3. Henry Solomon, baptised 31 December 1687 at St Columb Minor;[3]
  4. (?)Mary Solomon, baptised 21 October 1688 at St Columb Minor;[4]
  5. Francis Solomon, baptised 28 September 1689 at St Columb Minor;[5]

His wife Ann probably died in, or of the effects of, childbirth as an Ann Solomon, wife of Thomas was buried the same day as their youngest son Francis was baptised; 28 September 1689, also at St Columb Minor.[6]

Second marriage and children

Thomas' second marriage was probably to Rachel Barret and took place on 26 December 1693 at Colan, in Cornwall. At this stage I have only been able to trace two daughters of this marriage;

  1. Jane Solomon, baptised 4 December 1696 St Columb Major;[7]
  2. Martha Solomon, baptised 6 September 1699 at St Columb Major, [8] but perhaps died young and was buried at Colan on 29 November 1701[9]

Rachel (as Rachell Sollomon) must have died probably in late November 1713 and was buried at Colan on 29 November 1713.[10]

Third marriage and children

His third marriage was to Joan or Jane Rogers and took place at St Stephen in Brannel on 4 August 1716.[11] They had the following children:

  1. Rachell Solomon, baptised 23 March 1716/1717 at St Columb Major;[12]
  2. Mary Solomon, baptised 10 October 1719 at St Columb Major;[13]
  3. Samuel-Thomas (or Thomas-Samuel) Solomon;
  4. Samuel Solomon, died young and was buried 7 February 1734/1735 at St Columb Major;[14]
  5. Richard Solomon, baptised 18 October 1731 St Columb Major.

Death and burial

Thomas made a will on 16 September 1736, in which he left his eight children; Ann James, Henry Solomon, Francis Solomon, Jane Solomon, Rachell Johns, Mary Solomon, Samuel-Thomas Solomon, and Richard Solomon, one shilling each. The rest of his estate was to go to his wife Joan Solomon, provided she remain a widow. If she remarried then the estate was to be equally divided between this three youngest children; Mary, Samuel-Thomas and Richard. His wife was also named the sole executrix.

According to the inventory attached to the will, he died on 29 October 1736 and was buried on 31 October. The parish records of St Columb Major also confirm his burial on that date.[15]

His will was proved on 29 April 1737.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Solomon-3447 and Solomon-380 appear to represent the same person because: It appears that this is the same person

Hi Matt

I think this Thomas Solomon is a duplicate of this profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Solomon-380 but the daughter Jane Solomon, didn't marry Nicholas Trestrail. Thomas Solomon's will dated 1736 names his daughter Jane Solomon, but names two other daughters with their married names, so I would assume that Jane isn't married in 1736.

There is another Jane Salomon who was baptised in June 1696 at Perranzabuloe, the daughter of a different Thomas Salomon https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=baptisms&id=4096216 Perranzabuloe is an adjacent parish to Kenwyn, and I think it is more likely that it is this Jane Salomon who married Nicholas Trestrail.
