After finishing his studies he travelled to Australia and then to New Zealand, in 1870 he went to the Fiji Islands in the Schooner Tui Lan. He was there at the time of the bloody and general trivalwars and when Britain assusmed formal Protection, he was in the position to take up the appointment of Attorney General and to become a member of the Legislative Council.
He was a keen freemason and had filled the office of master in New south Wales and in Fiji, where he was considered the father of its freemasonry.
He was the editor the the Fiji Times and also was the first warden of Levuka. He was highly esteemed by the small Jewish community for the efficient manner in which he performed duries as a lay Chasan (Cantor) and to the ceremonies attaching to a Jewish Minister, Newish New Year and Day of Atonement services were held in his home.
Due to his ill health he returned to Australia with his wife and on the 24th March 1895 died at the home of his daughter at Mundaye, NSW.
His son David Jaffa Solomon remained in Levuka and was an auctioneer and commission agent.
