Biography

Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquis of Worcester was born about 1601. Graduated in 1627 from Cambridge University, England, with a Master of Arts Degree. Edward was the son of Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester and wife Anne Russell. He married Elizabeth Dormer in 1628 and they had two daughters and one son. English nobleman, Inventor and author. Published in 1655, The Century of Inventions which was printed in 1663, including a device described as the "Water-commanding Engine". He died on the 3rd of April 1667.Shelton-1487 17:25, 31 December 2014 (EST)

The real inventor of the hydraulic press and the steam engine?

(The famous story of James Watt observing the lifting of a kettle lid by the pressure of steam was originally told of the Marquess of Worcester. The steam engine was already widely used in Watt's time.)

  • Contributed significant war loans to the King, Charles I, during the English Civil War
  • Embarrassed by the surrender of his troops at Gloucester, while he was away visiting the King.
  • Received a commission from his king to make a treaty with troops in Ireland to support the royalist defense. When this treaty was discovered by the Parliament, King Charles denied knowledge and Edward Somerset was found guilty of Treason. He was banished and his lands were sequestered.
  • After the Restoration his lands were returned to him
  • Invented a kind of steam machine - his "water-commanding engine"

Legacy

  • Worcester County, Maryland is named in honor of Edward & his family. (Worcester County, Massachusetts was instead named after Worcestershire in England.)
