Jean Sonnier, son of Joseph dit Cadz Sonnier and Julienne Guidry, was born 12 December 1826 and baptized the following June. His birth was registered at St. John's Cathedral Church in Lafayette, Lafayette Parish, Louisiana.[1]

He married Emelie Fontenot, daughter of Antoine Fontenot and Mary Madeleine Stout, on 30 January 1849; their marriage was recorded at Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. [2]
