Biography

Walter was born in 1873 the second child of George Soper and Margaret Gillies.

Walter Edgar Soper was a mine deputy working in the coal mines of Kurri Kurri which were just to the south west of Newcastle. He married Phoebe Emma Wooderson in Newcastle in 1900 and they had 8 children. The Dorset Sopers, Robert Soper, 2012.

The New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Index) has 9 children: Walter E (b. 1901), Lillian M (b. 1902), Arthur J (b. 1904), Vera E (b. 1906), Delia F (b. 1910), Esther H (b. 1910), Elizabeth C (b.1910), George (b. 1914) and Robert (b.1914).

Walter's wife Phoebe had another daughter Iona (Mrs T J Newell) born in 1897 before Walter and Phoebe were married. No father is given for Iona in the birth registration index.
