Edward Sotheby was born in 1813. He was the son of Admiral, Thomas Sotheby and the Rt Honorable Lady Mary Ann Bourke. Edward was baptised on 28th July 1813 at Saint Andrews in Clifton, Gloucestershire[1].
He had four siblings, and at least two half-siblings. His mother died in 1830.
Edward had an extensive career in the Royal Navy, rising to the ranks of Admiral (having been commissioned in 1827). He fought in the Indian Mutiny between 1856 and 1857.
In 1864, Edward married Lucy Elizabeth Adeane. The marriage was registered in St George Hanover Square, Middlesex[2]. They went on to have at least five sons.
He lived at Menaifron, Dwyran, Anglesey, Wales. He was knighted (K.C.B.) in 1875.
In 1881, Sir Edward, a 67-year-old retired Admiral, was living with his wife and three sons in St George Hanover Square[3].
Edward passed away in 1902. His death was registered in St George Hanover Square, Middlesex [4] . He was buried at Highgate Cemetery, Highgate, Middlesex, England.
