Parents

His parents and wife are uncertain. A source such as a Will or other record is needed to link Moses to Joseph Suthard and Jemima Skidmore.Abbe-569 18:26, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

Federal Census

The census records of Madison Co, Virginia list Moses Southard from 1810 through 1830. There is no evidence of a wife in these records but for the most part, the known children can be identified. There are some inconsistencies in the ages in some cases due to the census enumerator stroking the wrong box.

1810

In 1810, Moses Southard was head of a 7 person household in Madison County, Virginia. They are conjectured to be as follows:[7]
Name: Moses Southard
Home in 1810 (City, County, State): Madison, Virginia
2 males under 10; Elias abt 10; Isaac abt 8
1 male of 16 thru 25; Lewis abt 22
1 male of 45 and over; Moses abt 57
2 females of 10 and under 16; Jenny abt 4 (miscounted); Sarah abt 14;
1 female of 16 and under 26; Lucy abt 16
Susan and Betsy both married in 1803 so the count of 6 remaining children appears to be correct.

1820

The US Census 1820, Madison Co, Virginia lists 6 individuals in the household of Moses Southard. They are believed to be as follows.
2 males of 10 and under 16; Elias abt 20 (miscounted); Isaac abt 18; (miscounted)
1 male of 45 and upwards; Moses abt 67
2 females of 10 and under 16; Jenny abt 14; 1 unknown
1 female of 26 and under 45; Sarah abt 26
Between 1810 and 1820 Lucy and Lewis both married and are both enumerated separately with their respective families. The 1 female 10 to 16 is a mystery but I do not believe she was a child of Moses. Possibly a cousin.

1830

The US Census 1830, Madison Co, Virginia lists 4 individuals in the household of Moses Southard. They are believed to be as follows.
1 male of 20 and under 30; Isaac abt 28
1 male of 70 and under 80; Moses abt 77
2 females of 15 and under 20: Sarah abt 34 (miscounted); Jenny abt 24 miscounted);
Between 1820 and 1830 Elias married and is enumerated separately with his family.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Moses by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Moses:

Southard-583 and Southard-572 are not ready to be merged because: I do not believe these two to be the same person. No parents for one, different dates for birth and death. No spouse for one, and the children do not match. I am placing this as postponed so that more information can be gathered.
