Veteran of Civil War Passed Away at Soldiers' Home
Henry Lewis Southard of West Second street and Park avenue died yesterday noon, in the Soldiers' Home, at Kearny, where he had been in the hospital since last November. He was eighty-three years old, and lived most of his life in Plainfield. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon, and interment will be made in Soldiers' Cemetery, at Kearny, which was his wish to lie with his soldier friends of the Civil War.
Surviving are two sons, Charles of the Plainfield Fire Department and Walter, of the Pectorial Plasters Co., 404 East second street. and four step-daughters, Mrs. Emma Babcock, of Beverly, Mass.; Mrs Bertha Hughes of Camden, N.J.; Mrs. Edith Johnson, of Vineland, N.J. and Miss Cora Naylor, of 103 Manning avenue, North Plainfield, and one brother, Elias Southard, of West Fourth street.
Mr. Southard was a veteran of the Civil War, serving three years, he was wounded in one of the battles, but recovered. He served with one of the companies from New York City.
By trade he was a painter, but for the past thirteen years had lived retired. In recent years he has spent the winters in the Soldiers' Home in Kearny, and the summers here.
Jack WIlson Note: According to Civil War records he served for 3 months, not 3 years. He service ended after he was wounded.: Source: #S179
