Biography

Susannah was a minor when the will of her father, Ambrose Long, was written in Nov 1790 in Caswell County; she was among the "small children" listed. Given the placement in the will, she might have been his youngest child.[1][2]

On 9 Jun 180?, a marriage bond was obtained in Person Co. by John Southard for his marriage to Susee Long. The other bondsman was Isaac Fuller. What, if any, relationship he had to Sussanah is unknown, but he was a neighbor.[3][4] The final digit of the year is cut-off in the handwritten bond. It's been transcribed as a 7 or 9. [5] [6] However, bonds from those years generally were written on a printed form. The year is more likely 1802. This is consistent with John Southard's death which occurred before 15 Dec 1804 when an inventory of his estate was taken in Person Co. [7] Susannah Southard was a purchaser of multiple item during the estate sale on 19 Mar 1805. Familiar names among the purchasers were James Long, Robert Southard, Joseph Carver, John Long, and Reubin Long. Susanna Southard was noted to be the estate's adminstratrix. [8] On 5 May 1806, John "Non" and James Long obtained a marriage bond in Person, NC for the marriage between John Non and Susannah Suthard.[9][10] In the 1830 census for John Nunn, there is a 40-50 y/o female in the household. If this is her, it would indicate she was born between 1780 and 1790.[11]

"Miss Long" is listed as the mother of Reuben Nunn[12][13] and Susan Nunn Stilts[14] on their death certificates. "One Nunn descendent stated in 1960 that John married a Miss Long in Roxboro, North Carolina; another Nunn descendant said that a woman named Long was John's second wife. John named one of his sons Reuben, possibly after the Reuben Long who lived in Person County in 1800 and 1810 and who may have been the father of John's wife."[15] This conclusion of a second wife may be based on the mismatch between the names of "Miss Long" and Susannah Southard.

"John farmed near Lawsonville, Rockingham County, North Carolina, His wife died before 1837, In that year, he and his children and his daughter, Nancy London and her family, set out in a covered wagon for Lincoln, Missouri, where John's eldest son, Calton, had gone. The hard- ships of the journey caused them to stop at Center, Barren (now Metcalfe) County , Kentucky."[15]

Research Notes

The biography of Lucinda Nunn notes that her older brother, Millar, was a half-brother.[16]

In 1809, Lohn Long, Jesse Long, Benjamin Long, John Long, Reubin Long Jr, James Long, and Reubin Long Sr were taxed in Person Co. There was also a Joshua Nunn there.

In the 1810 census for Person Co, there are four Long men listed, Reuben Sr. and Jr., James, and John.

See LONG MISCELLANY for other Long census info: FamilySearch Book: 103793, p. A-76

Sometime between 1820-1824, the following Long men were taxed in Person Co.: John Sen, Byrd, Paul, James, John Jun, Rowland Jun, and Jacob.

James Long's 1851 will in Person, NC does not mention any Nunn grandchildren. While this might be due to the fact that they had moved to Kentucky, another grandchild in Missouri was mentioned.
