Lakeman, a butcher, age 28, enlisted as a private in Company G, 23rd Infantry on 10 October 1861. He served as head cook at the Civil War hospital in New Bern, North Carolina.[6] Lakeman was then a patient in the hospital for 16 months for chronic rheumatism,[7] until he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corp on 11 January 1864, and was discharged 27 September 1864 at New Bern, North Carolina. He filed for a pension on 2 September 1886. Application 584211; Certificate 399991.[8] Head cook at hospital.
By 1870, the family of four has moved to Wenham, Massachusetts. Lakeman is a trader. [9]

Lakeman's wife Augusta died in 1896.[10]
There seems to be two Lakeman Southwick's. This man is the 28 year old butcher from Beverly who served in the Civil War. In the 1895 City Directory for Salem, MA, Augusta W. Southwick is listed at the widow of Lakeman.[11]
The Lakeman Southwick who died 4 Oct 1901 and is buried in Hamilton, Massachusetts, [12] was married to Mary A. Brewer, and had children born in 1881 and 1888.
