I don't think either of the birth register entries mentioned can be correct, as the mother's maiden names don't match.

Southwood, William John, Q2 1850 Vol 10 Page 103 (Exeter) - mother's maiden name Jordan Southwood, William, Q1 1851 Vol 10 Page 181 (Newton Abbot) - mother's maiden name Fey

I've done a fairly extensive search on possible alternate spellings etc and haven't found any birth entry that seems to match. It's possible that I've missed something, but it's also possible that the birth wasn't registered, as it wasn't mandatory in 1850.
