AGED VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR SUCCUMBS TO DEATH--John F. Sowards, who has been residing at the Jack Payne boarding house on Lawrence near Fourth Street, passed away this morning shortly after three o'clock. Death was due to a complication of diseases. The deceased was an uncle of Jack Payne and has been ill for several months. He came to this city about a year ago from in the county and has been at the Payne boarding house since that time. His illness has continued for some time and his death was not a surprise. The deceased was a member of the G.A.R., and that organization will have charge of the services over the remains.

Mr. [Payne] was 72 years of age and was born in Lawrence County. He enlisted in the Civil War when still a young man and served his country gallantly. After the war he returned to this county. He was never married, but two sisters, Mrs. Alice Shelton in Missouri and Mrs. Malinda Payne are left to mourn the demised.
