Christopher Claude Sowden was born in 1912, a son of Frederick Claude Sowden and Irene Clazie Pickering. He was named after his grandfather, Christopher Pickering, husband of Isabella Clazie. The middle name, Claude, came from his father.
Handwriting on his birth record was bad: it appears to show the mother's middle name as "Elsie" - it was actually "Clazie" and came from her grandfather, William Clazie.
Christopher Claude Sowden's father, Frederick Claude Sowden, died in October 1911, about 4 months before the child was born.
He attended high school at Cobourg, Ontario. The 1927 class yearbook showed "Chris Claude Sowden". His mother died in 1929, shortly before his 17th birthday.
He died in 1967, age just 55, and was buried at Baltimore, Ontario. His grave marker shows "C. Claude Sowden", indicating that he preferred his 2nd name. The exact date of death isn't shown on the grave marker - just the year. But it does name his wife: Elva Agnes Collins.
